Olympic Gold Winner 2000
Towanda! Camilla brings home the gold When it really matters, the
amazone warrior awakens in Camilla and she takes care of turning
the defeat into victory! The Hungarians were leading and already
saw themselves collecting gold, when Anette Hoffmann and Camilla
exploded and in the last few minutes brought the Olympic gold back
to Denmark, where it belongs. "But why does she need to have TWO
gold medals", Mia complained afterwards; "I also want one!". Now
the Norwegian has a bronze version to bring to the Frederiksberg
apartment - and she just may be allowed to borrow the gold one for
a few seconds.
Camilla, Mette Vestergaard and Mia, all playing for FIF were celebrated
by the mayor of Frederiksberg together with family memebers (and
- the press!!). Who said I'm quitting?, Camilla said to them. She
has not yet decided wether to continue or not. Let us hope that
she makes the right decision - for herself, her family and for all
us handball lovers. See a nice picture from the
town hall with the three FIF players and the proud mayor.
Camilla's last tournament?
This may be the last we get to see of Camilla Andersen on the national
team. She will consider wether to continue or not after the Olympics.
The pressure of the press and the high expectations of her also
in FIF has drained her strength and motivation to play. Coach Jan
Pytlick has tried to cheer her up and prepare her for the international
press in Sydney. He finds, that she feels a bit better now but she
will have to show all her motivation and strength for the "win-or-die"
match against France. And that she seems to have, the team needs
revenge for the lost World Championship quarterfinals. And then
she really dislikes the way France plays handball and thus she would
just love to send them out with a big kick.
Private life exposed
Camilla and Mia are getting seriously fed up with the endless interest
of the press about their private life. Again and again they must
see themselves on the front pages of the tabloids, also during the
Olympics. One "theme" was the removal and reinsertation of details
in Mia's and Camillas Olympic profiles (see the news
for more details). The other the "grand meeting" on the court between
Denmark and Norway - a match written about for months in advance
and voices questionning their objectivity and professionalism during
the match, resulting in Camilla being a nervous wreck during the
match, making it the worst she has ever played and leading to a
Danish defeat. Furthermore, during the match Sports Illustrated
was there to prepare for at big article about this first married
couple to meet in an Olympic match. (Please contact me if you want
to know details about that article as copy-rights forbid me to bring
it here.)
Recently all the tabloids took a comment from an interview in the
magazine Tjeck and
exposed it in big headlines: Camilla and Mia wants to have a baby
(well, some day at least). Here are some extracts
from that (in)famous Tjeck article (watch the photos of a styled
Camilla on their site if they have not removed the article), where
Camilla tries to be as honest and open as possible in order to stop
all the talking - hah! and see where that took her.
Dream team 2000
You can see my (poor but Photoshop glazed) photos from the last
of Anja's Dream Team matches
in Roskilde on May 17th - there should be a few where you can vaguely
spot Camilla! The text is in Danish, unfortunately (I can translate,
though, if anybody requires it).
In Abenraa, the couple chose to do a surprising little sapphic
happening, as the players made their various little intros.
Second best player of the year
Camilla did not manage to be elected the Female Player of the Year but only came second. Just wait.. next year...! Ausra Fridrikas (Austria) won and Cecilie Leganger (keeper, Norway) was third.
