You don't need to stay in the old town to enjoy Freiburg. There are beautiful hotels and buildings in the inner suburbs such as Wiehre and Stuehlinger, as well as cheap, yummy restaurants - Brennessel serves spaghetti bolognaise for under 2 euros and leek cream pancakes for 2.60! Further away (by this I mean ten mins by bike or 7 on the tram) you will find suburbs such as hilly Herdern, with its huge family houses and green gardens, or Littenweiler on the foothills with its eclectic mix of old and new houses. Try Onkel Wok for cheap, yummy Vietnamese or there is cheap Doner Kebab and pizza everywhere. But DEFINITELY eat something from the region...Sptzle, Schupfnudeln, Flammkuchen, Black Forest Cake, bratwurst, honey schnapps, Bratkartoffeln.... |

Any potential student who is worried about what the student accommodation might be like - worry no more!!! Here is just one example of a student apartment building called Hndelwohnheim. The rooms were big and airy and the view of the Herdern hills from the windows was beautiful (below). Other student houses include Vauban in the south, StuSie on the lake, one in the trendy district of Sthlinger and some others to the east of the town centre, near the river. |

If you have a few days (or are going to be staying for a long time) in Freiburg, buy a cheap bicycle and tour the backstreets where you can see old fashioned bakeries, Black Forest style houses and the little Freiburg street creeks or drains (right). You don't have to walk far to find yourself suddenly in the deep green trees of the Black Forest, of which Freiburg is often considered the gateway. Make an old style barbeque on the Sternwaldwiese, gawk at beautiful German houses in the highest parts of Hauptstrasse or wander up to the Mecure Panorama for good views, from where you can walk in the Black Forest all the way to Schlossberg and beyond. In all the suburbs you will find supermarkets such as Aldi, Lidl and my favourite for its selection, Kaufland (Shopping Country!). In autumn the Botanical garden and the Black Forest display the most amazing colours, whereas in summer the vines on the sides of houses become green and red. If you are lucky you may even get some snow, which means you must buy a bottle of Gluhwein and some candied nuts. The highlight is New Years eve: from Schlossberg the town seems alive with firecrackers. |
