| Apart from the obvious trip to Basel (or anywhere in Switzerland if you can afford it), there are many other places outside of Freiburg and the Black Forest that you can visit. Colmar, left, is one of my favourite French towns, especially at Christmastime when it is full of coloured lights and markets. Take the train or bus to Breisach and change to the bus (at the station) to Colmar. The journey takes an hour, and at the end you can eat crepes and Tarte Flambee as you wander the windy streets between the half-timbered, colourful houses and peek into little french shops selling nougat, chocolate and fresh bread. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Right is a photo of the Rheinfall, one of the biggest waterfalls in Europe. Get there by taking a train to Basel and changing for the train to Schaffhausen. The town itself is really pretty but make sure you go on a little boat out into the white water, it's very impressive! The parks here are really nice and you can even climb onto that rock in the middle of the river. There is a kind of castle on the opposite bank. Take a different train home through the Black Forest for a beautiful view, changing in Neustadt. Bring a bit of extra money because Schaffhausen is on the Swiss border (Bratwurst E 5.00!) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| No stay in Freiburg is complete without a visit to the Strassbourg Christmas markets, which are HUGE. It is also a very pretty town with a nice Dom, and some good underground Flammkuchen restaurants. Wander around Little Venice to get some nice shots of the canals and the medieval towers, which make you feel like it is 1000 years ago! You can take a boat tour along the canals, too. There is a cool art gallery near the covered bridge which is worth visiting. Get to Strasbourg by taking the train and changing at Offenburg. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Meersburg (right) and Konstanz are must-sees for any visitor. Meersburg is such a typical on-the-lake town, with icecream shops, shoreside restaurants, beaches and of course a castle! Come in Summer and you can buy strawberries or Asparagus at street stalls from the local farmers. Take a boat trip on the lake or even hop across to the Alps for a day if you have a car. Other amazing towns to visit near Freiburg include Heidelberg and Karlsruhe, where you can see postcard-like castles and palaces. Just over the Rhein is the town of New Breisach, surrounded by a medieval moat. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The picture on the left wasn't taken in Scandinavia...this was in Scandinavian land at Europa Park!! Germany's answer to Disneyland is not too expensive, tickets including day pass and bus from Freiburg are just over thirty euros. The park is divided into European countries with Disney-style rides, European food and shows including a 3D theatre. Freiburg is only one hour from Basel's Euroairport, where Easyjet fly to Mallorca, Nice, all over Europe in fact. There is a bus to the airport from Freiburg's central bus station every hour or so. The train to Frankfurt airport takes two hours, or in just over two hours you can take the minibus to Karlsruhe airport. So weekend trips can be easily organised and are often not too expensive. |
