I am an Australian student currently studying a Master degree in Freiburg. I come from Perth, a city on the west coast of Australia. I recommend it for tourists for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear water and spectacular sunsets (right). I took this photo at City Beach one Summer evening. Some of my friends in Freiburg asked my why an Australian would want to live in Germany if we are missing out on the beaches and sunny weather. I always miss Australia when I am in Germany but there is a part of me that really loves the German culture, the student life and the landscape. I fell in love with Freiburg on the first day I arrived when I grabbed a doner kebab and wandered the streets of the old town on a sunny afternoon, not able to believe that this was the place I was to call home for the next few years. A few  hours later I met my wonderful housemates-to-be and a new life began.
I study European culture, language and history, and therefore a university town in the centre of Europe is a dream for me. I cannot promote the student exchange (or foreign study) experience enough: if you get the chance, do it. There are plenty of jobs in Freiburg for students, such as helping out in the uni, babysitting schoolkids on their lunchbreaks, translation, essay correction in english and tutoring possibilities. The Baden-Wrttemberg Landestifting also offers scholarships which are worth applying for.
These photos show some of the things I miss about Australia: the wide open spaces (above) and the spectacular summer storms (right). Below is the view from my grandparents' house, however it reminds me in some ways of the views one gets in Freiburg. I must admit that swimming in a lake, pool or river is not the same as swimming at the beach, but on the other hand, you can't beat snowy Christmases and ski holidays. You meet new people every day in Freiburg and the town is so small that you will always run into old friends. It is also perfect for tourists because it is so German yet so international.
So far some of my most memorable experiences in Freiburg include dressing up for the Halloween party in Stusie, going with friends to their holiday house on Lake Constance, riding my bike at 2 am home from the irish pub and singing with friends, the dormitory-wide snowfight we had on the evening of the first snow, learning to dance Salsa in Palladium, giving my first presentation in a Seminar and being told by other students that it was really interesting, a class excursion to Scotland, seeing the rolling hills during a hike in the High Black Forest, skiing on Feldberg, drinking Gluhwein at the Christmas Markets, laughing at the speeches of Karneval, and...and...
