| First of all, Freiburg, as a student town with a large international population, has quite a reputation as one of Germany's more laid back towns. The centre is full of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, everything you can think of. Personally I love just going out for icecream (so many flavours to choose from!) and eating it while walking through the streets. At sunset the cobbles seem like they are made of gold (right). If you aren't an icecream person, why not try a traditional German passtime and visit the beer garden of Feierling or Ganter (two breweries), or sit in the old fashioned pub at Martinsbrau. German restaurants are easiest to find in the backstreets of the old town, especially on the Mnsterplatz and in the backstreets between the Mnster, Schwarzwald and Augustinerplatz. You can also easily find indian, turkish, malaysian, italian...whatever you feel like. For the dancers among us, ElPi puts on some good nights, hidden in Schiffstrasse across from Schwarzwaldcity. On Student night you get free entry and a drink token. Sometimes they have ska-punk nights, sometimes old rock, and often on student night they will play all the fun classic hits so that everyone can enjoy it. |

| For the latino in you, Palladium in the train station does salsa and merengue classes, with open dance night afterwards. On Tuesdays this is free for students. If the crowd is good they throw in a bit of reggaton too! Stusiebar do some good parties (such as the Halloween party), and keep an eye out for faculty parties such as Big Medi Night. Jazzhaus is known for its WICKED international concerts, I saw Panteon Rococo from Mexico while I was there, but they also support alternative artists. The Mudon Bar in Stuhlinger has cheap cocktails for students, and El Bolero sometimes get in live bands from Argentina and other fun places. You won't be bored on any night in Freiburg! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| But of course, culture isn't just about drinking and dancing. There is plenty of good old fashioned German culture in Freiburg!!!! Most suburbs have their own Strassenfest (street festival) where they shut off the road and fill it with food stalls, get a few bands in and make mojitos like there's no tomorrow. Karneval is fun in Freiburg, with many comedy shows, a whole bunch of street parades, costumes galore, free sausages for the kids and the citizens even take over the Rathaus for a weekend. Other traditions are also honoured - for instance, walk past a cemetery on all souls night and you will see red candles lit at the graves. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| You can't live in one of Germany's most famous wine regions without trying the local plonk....The Freiburger Weinfest sees the Mnsterplatz filled with wine stalls for a whole weekend. Buy a bottle and share it with some friends while surrounded by merry people. Further afield, the Ihringen Weinfest has a reputation as one of the most beautiful village wine festivals. I was invited to go with some friends to the Breisach wine festival, where there is not only wine but also plenty of food, entertainment and rides. If rides are your think, several times a year the Messe in Freiburg is used for circuses, fairs, even Kirmes, a traditional festival-turned-funpark, with a ferris wheel and the works. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| If you are going to come to Freiburg then there are a few traditions you need to know. Firstly, there is the well known old wives' tale that if you trip up or step in one of the Bchle (little streams in the street) then you have to marry a Freiburger (person born in Freiburg). While you are in Freiburg, see if you can find out what a Freiburger Bbbele ist, or what "Narri Narro!" means. Have a go at understanding the Badisch dialect (this may not be easy if you have only been studying high German for a year or so!) or get someone to show you how to make Sptzle the REAL way. To be a true Freiburg tourist you have to climb to the top of the Mnster when the bells are ringing, or for a really amazing experience, walk around town just before or after Mass starts, when all the bells in town ring... | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
