Personal Interpretation of Seduction Before reading: The following is simply my interpretation of the Merle Collins' poem Seduction. Please note that my views do not necessarily reflect the views of the author. When Rotten Pomerack was written, Merle Collins was
living in London. She had left her native land of Grenada and was living
with her sister. It is apparent that Ms. Collins feels that often, when
we travel abroad, we are persuaded by the environment and lifestyles
of the people that cause us to stay longer.
The poem portrays Merle as the victim. She has come to a land of which her friends have described and her surroundings are so foreign. Her sister is used quite exquisitely as a person who was once in Merle's same situation. In the majority of stanzas, Her sister speaks of how hard it is to leave a place of dwelling. She points out that despite the overwhelming feeling of wanting to leave, there are positive aspects about that place that overtake all of the negative aspects. These are the things that seduce us into staying in that particular place.
