The Health survey and Development Committee poplarly known as the Bhore Committee in its report published in 1946 recommended the establishmend of national medical centre at Delhi which will concentrate on training well qualified teachers and reasearch workers in order that steady stream of these could be maintained to meet the needs os the raidlyexpanding health activites throughtout the country. After the attainment of independence the Union Ministry of Health proceeded to implement the challenging idea. A munificient grant of one million pounds by the Govt. of New Zealand through the Colombo Plan helped to translate the idea into reality. An Act of parliament in 1956 established of national importance and defined its objectives and functions. By virture of this. The degree granted by the Institure under the All India Institute od Medical sciences act are recognised medical qualifications for the purpose of the Indian Medical Council Act. And not withstanding anything contained the in the Indian Medical Council Act are deemed to be included in the first schedule of the Act, entitling te holders to the same privileges as those attached to the equivalent awards form the recognised Universities of India.

 

The Institute consists os a massive complex of buildings, housing the teaching departments research laboratories, a hospital speciality centres and outpatient clinics, library and auditorium. This is a residential intitution in which the faculty members other staff and the student live on campus. There are eight hostels (6 for boys and 2 for girls) with a capacity of 600 rooms for te postraduate studens. There are separaet hostels for undergraduate students. The Hospital has 1560 beds including the paying wards

 

Admission to the postgraduate courses at this Institute was started in the year 1956 by admitting a few students in the pre and paraclinical disciplines. Gradually with the development of laboratories. Hospital and other facilities postgraduate students were also admitted to other specialities. At present the AMIS is awarding postgraduate degreen in about forty five(45) different specilities, the postraduate curriculam is constantly the subject for discussion at the Faculty and Staff Council levels and the required changes in the curriculam are brought about in order to evolve a pattern which is most suitable for the Indian needs and conditions.

 

Research has high premium and manuy departments are actively engaged in the investigations of problems which are of significance to the country in the field of medical relief and community health.

 

The prime concern of the Institute is to develop of teaching in undergraduate and postradute and postgraduate medical education in all the branches so as to demostrate a high standarad of medical education to all medical colleges and other allied institution in India. In the fields of postrgaduate education the most essential function of the Institution is to provide opportunities for training teachers for medical studens are exposed to the newer methods of teaching and given opportunities to actively participate in teaching exercies. The other important objectives of the Institute are to bring together in one place educational. The educational principles and practices being adpoted are those which are best suited to the needs of the nation. Adpodtion of education to meet the problmes of rural health is major pre-occupation. To this effect the Institute has been able to initiate a model development block in collaboration with the Harayana Govt. The institute has also been able to initiate model educational programme in Community Emphasis in laid on active learning process and on the cultivation of scholarly habits and scientific methods.
