Information for candidates for D.P.M. Phil in Medical and Social Psychology. M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work, M.D. (Psychiatry), Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and D.P.N. courses.

1. The Institute has been enstablished by the Government of India for postgraduate teaching and research in Psychiatry and allied fields of Behavioural Sciences. It prepares candidates for the Diploma in Psychological Medicine (D.P.M.) M.Phil in Medical and Social Psychology, M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work, M.D. (Psychiatry), Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing (D.P.N.)

2. The number of seats available for the courses is as follows :

M.Phil in psychiatric Social Work - 6

M.D. (Psychiatry) - 4

Ph.D in Clinical Psychology - 4

Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing - 4

15 percent and 7.5 percent of the seats are reserved for Scheduled Caste and scheduled Tribe candidates respectively.

3. Admissions are made on the recommendations of the Selection Committee of the Institute. The selection is entirely based on merit, a written examination and interview. The selection is subject to all other rules and regulations of the Ranchi University.

Selection Precedure for M.D. and D.P.M.

The selection will depend upon performance in the past academic career, marks obtained in the entrance test and marks obtained in the interview if selected for the same.

The entrance test will be of a MCQ type consisting of 100 questions to be answered in 60 minutes. There will he negative marking for wrong answers. For candidates appearing without any postgraduate qualification in Psychiatry, the test will have questions of M.B.B.S. standard in the following approximate distribution.

20% from Anatomy, Physiology & Biochemistry

20% from Pharmacology, Pathology & PSM

10% Ophthalmology & ENT, Obstetrics & Gynaecology & Surgery

20% from General Medicine

30% from Psychiatry, Neurology and allied behavioural sciences.

In case of candidates appearing for the M.D. course after completing D.P.M., the test will have question s of MBBS and DPM standard in the following approximate distribution :

20% from MBBS course

20% from Psychology and allied sciences

20% from Neurology and basic sciences in relation to Psychiatry

40% from Psychiatry

Candidate will be called for an interview depending on their relative performance in the previous career and the written test.

4. Diploma in Psychological Medicine (D.P.M.)

Duration : Two years of fulltime studies and clinical work

Commencement of the course : 1st week of August every year

Qualification for admission : Should have passed M.B.B.S. examination of a recognised University by Medical Council of India and one year rotating internship.

5. M.Phil in Medical and Social Psychology

Duration : Two years of full-time studies and clinical work.

Commencement of the course : 1st week of August every year

Qualification for admission : Must have passed Master's degree in Psychology of a recognised University with minimum 50% marks in aggregate.

6. M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work

Duration : Two years of full-time studies and clinical

Commencement of the course : 1st week of August every year

Qualification for admission : Master's degree in Sociology or social Work of a recognised University with minimum 50% marks in aggregate.

7. M.D. (Psychiatry)

Duration : Three years

Exemption : Holders of the postgraduate medical degree/D.P.M. may be given upto one year exemption at the discretion of the Ranchi University.

Commencement of the course : 1St week of August every year

Qualification for admission : MBBS degree of Ranchi University or any other University recognised by the Ranchi University and by the Indian Medical Council and one year compulsory rotating internship.

8. Ph.D. Clinical Psychology

Duration : 3 years for M.A. degree holders and 2 yearsd after D.M. & S.P./M.Phil in Medical Social Psychology

Commencement of the course : 1st week of August every year

Qualification for admission : First class Master's degree in Psychology or Diploma/M.Phil in Medical and social Psychology.

9. Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing (DPN)

Duration : One year

Commencement of the course :1st week of August every year

Qualification : "A" Grade Certificate or Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery recognised by the Indian Nursing Council and Registered Nurse.

Experience : Two years as a Staff Nurse.

10. Examination for DPM M.Phil in Medical and Social Psychology adn M.Phil in Psychiatric Social Work.

The examination (Written, viva and practicals) for the courses will be held in two parts — Part I and Part II. The Part I examination for all the three courses mentioned above will be held at the end of the first academic year. No student will be admitted to the Final examination util he has passed Part I examination.

The courses of study and subjects of the examinations for DPM and M.Phil courses shall be as follows :

Paper II — Psychosocial basis of human behaviour including psychology, developmental psychology and social psychology

Paper III — Psychopathology, Psychodiagnostics,psychodynamics and experimental design

Paper I - Psychiatry

Paper II - Psychiatry

Paper III - Neurology, Neuropathology

M.Phil in Medical and Social Psychology

Part

Paper I - Socio-cultural bssis of behaviour

Paper II - Methods of Clincal Research

Paper III - Research methods and Statistics

This consists of - 1, Written, 2. Practical or Clinical, 3. Oral

Paper IV - General Medicine related to Psychiatry

12. Scheme of Examination for Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology

There shall be 3 periodical assessments during the first year by a Board consisting Director of the Institute and two other members.

Approval of Thesis and candidates have to defend the thesis in Viva.

13. Scheme of examination for Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing (DPN)

Paper I - Biological Basis of Human Behaviour and Neuro - Science and Psychiatry

Paper II - Psychology

Paper III - Applied Sociology

Paper IV - Psychiatric Nursing 'A'

Paper V - Psychiatric Nursing 'B'

14. Fess

At present no tuition fee is being charged.

15. Scholarship/Residency.

Candidates finally selected for M.D. and DPM may be considered for Junior REsidency and for M.Phil and Ph.D. courses stipend of Rs. 850/- pm The present number of stipendiary seats for M.Phil and Ph.D. course is 12. The stipend may be available for only two years. Decision regarding grant of stipend is taken by the Directorate General of Health Services, New Delhi.

The number of seats in each discipline is subject to change without assigning any reason.

Selected candidates for DPN are likely to considered for stipend of Rs. 25- per month.

16. Hostel accomodation

The Institute maintains a Men's and Women's hostel for its postgraduate students.

From the pool of applications, suitable candidates would be asked to appear for a written examination and interview after which the final selection will be made. Examination ad interview and like to take place at the Institute in June/July (date and time will be intimated to the candidatescalled for examination and interview). No T.A. be admissible for coming to the examination/interview.
