Doug is the one constant you'll always see when you attend a Memory Brothers' gig. It may be "Doug & Larry" or it may be "Doug & Mike" or "Doug & Kevin" or "Doug & Chris" etc. . . . it might even be Doug solo.
He and Larry Crandall are the original duo. As an offshoot of the Rubber Band, in the '60s "Doug & Larry" went on the road as a two-piece. They toured full-time until 1977. Then Doug enlisted longtime friend and neighbor Kevin Conner from 1977-1990 -then Mike Williams from 1990-1995 -then Mike Flack from 1995.
After Mike Flack retired from the road in the late '90s, Doug began using a rotating roster of "brothers." And he in fact added several new faces, including Christopher Jon, Dave Christopherson, John Condon, and Andy Webb. So, today you may see Doug appearing with any one of his "brothers."
The "sound" of the Memory Brothers remains surprisingly consistent from line up to line up considering the diverse pool of talent from which Doug draws. Each "brother" brings his own style and personality, but Doug is the backbone and is responsible for giving the Memory Brothers their signature sound. |
