INSTRUCTIONS FOR WRITTEN COMPETITION (2004)

  1. All contestants are to be seated before the competition begins. The Mathlete should bring no materials other than pencils and a calculator into the competition room. No QWERTY keyboard calculators are permitted.
  2. Area test team members should sit in alternate seats if possible.
  3. Tests will be handed out FACE DOWN.
  4. When the proctor gives you the signal to begin, turn the test over and put your name and the name of your school on the front of the test.
  5. Start and stop when the proctor indicates. There will be THIRTY minutes working time for the area tests, TWENTY minutes for the team competitions.
  6. YOUR FINAL ANSWER MUST BE IN THE SPACE PROVIDED.
  7. Should you have a question after the exam begins, raise your hand; the proctor will come to you.

8. Scores are based on complete answers only. NO PARTIAL CREDIT.

  1. ALL ANSWERS SHOULD BE IN SIMPLEST FORM.
    1. Radicals
      1. No perfect factor is to be left under the radical.
      2. No fraction is to be left under the radical.
      3. No radical should appear in the denominator.
      4. The index of the radical is to be as low as possible.
    1. Fractions should be reduced to lowest terms.
    2. Repeating decimals should be left in their equivalent fractional form.
    3. Numerical substitutions for all irrational numbers should NOT be made unless stipulated in the problem.
  1. Specific instructions stated in the problem take precedence over any of the above.
  1. If a problem pertains to units of measure, the final answer must reflect the correct units of measure.
  2. Answers for the CALCULATOR test must be rounded to four significant digits.
  3. Do not leave your seat until all of the papers have been collected and the proctor tells you to go.
