About me
What is karate?
Obviously karate teaches people something of self defense and provides a fun exercise routine. What some people do not realize is that karate has a lot more to offer than just a real life version of the Karate Kid. Are you looking for a self-esteem builder? Try karate. Looking for a way to boost your self-discipline? Try karate. Need a better attitude? Try karate.

However, do know that karate-do isn't a fix all formula for self-improvement. Karate-do can only take you as far as you want to go. You have to work, and sweat, get bruised and cut and push yourself to extremes that you didn't know you were capable of before you are really ready to begin.

They say that a black belt signifies the ability to truly begin the do of karate-do. I believe that this is true. Humility may be the greatest thing that karate-do has to offer.

Shotokan Karate of America: What is karate?
What is Shotokan?
Technically the term karate originated with Shotokan. However, since different forms of martial arts came to America karate has become a catchall phrase used to describe all forms of martial arts. '

Shotokan was developed by Gichin Funakoshi.
Shoto was Master Funakoshi's pen name as he was also a poet. Kan means house, and so Shotokan was a  name given to Funakoshi's students that trained at his dojo.

Check out the links below for history and information about Funakoshi and the history of Shotokan.
