A dojo is the place of training for karatekas, practitioners of Shotokan. In bigger cities this could be a special studio devoted solely to karate-do or it could be as simple as the local gym. Within the dojo the main teacher is called a sensei (pronounced sen-say). He is the leader of club and what he says goes. A dojo is not a democracy. The secondary teachers or mentors, usually Senior Students of 3rd, 2nd and 1st Kyu and lower ranking Dons, are called senpei (pronounced sen-pay). Within the dojo, the sensei, senpeis, and students follow a code of conduct called the Dojo Kun.

Dojo Kun
The Dojo Kun was originally written in Japanese by Gichin Funakoshi. When I was training in my old dojo I learned the traditional English translation:: 1. Seek Perfection of Character 2. Be Faithful 3. Endeavor 4. Respect Others 5. Refrain from violent behavior
