| �� Our school district has adopted the Scott Foresman Reading program.� It features both reading together and independent reading.� Our first grade program consists of 6 books.� Each book takes about 6 weeks to complete.� �The selections in our reading books consist of phonics-based stories written especially for our text, as well as real children's literature. We also have paper phonics readers which go along with the skills we are learning. | �� Another part of our reading instruction is called Guided Reading. For this, the children are divided into groups according to their needs. Small groups work with the teacher on books at their reading levels. The groups are flexible and can be changed as needed. Children are grouped across the entire first grade for guided reading instruction. | Reading Homework | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Reading homework is assigned by your child's guided reading teacher so reading homework will differ from group to group. For instance, I usually assign homework on weekdays, rather than weekends. Reading homework usually consists of reading a stapled paper book that we have practiced reading in class. The child reads the book to a parent or other responsible adult. The adult then signs and dates the enclosed paper and the child returns it to class the next day. Not having the paper signed may mean that the child has to read the book in the Workroom during recess time. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| ��� When the children get stuck on a word, we ask them to try these strategies before we will tell them the word.� When they read for you at home, please ask them to try these strategies if they get stuck: 1.� Look at the picture. 2. Get your mouth ready for the first sound. 3. Go back to reread. 4. Find chunks in the word. 5.
