| Vern Smith has been a watersports instructor at Mayesbrook Lake since 1993 and is very committed to his job. He has seen many changes to the club since he first joined, and many different members of staff come and go. Vern is married to Diane, and has two young children. Vern's current interests apart from watersports instructing include swimming, hiking, cross-country running and skiing. Vern organises and leads sailing trips to various venues; including national regattas, open meetings and the London Heathrow Youth Games. Vern enjoys assisting young people in their stimulating challenges on the water, as well as having fun devoloping their social lives off of the water. Vern quotes: "Seeing youngsters getting involved in sports makes me feel proud to be part of the process". To show their appreciation towards Vern, members of the sailing squad nominated him for Coach of the Year in the borough awards 2002, and Vern won the award. |
