Costa Rica...

Arenal Volcano is said to be 4500 years old, and is still active! It rises to the height of 1633 metres or 5356 feet above sea level.

It is quite an amazing sight when you are driving towards it, it's like you see in pictures. The cone shaped Volcano, not the ones that look like a mountain.

Remember how we used to draw Volcanoes when we were younger?! It's just about the same thing. It's breathtakingly beautiful. It's very easy to sit there and stare the minutes away.

Irazu Volcano is about 50 KM east of San José, located in the province of Cartago.

The last time it erupted was in 1963, falling ashes continued for about 1 year. A lot of damage was done to the area, but since then, it has recuperated.

When I went up there, to me, it had the feeling of being on a moon crater. A very eerie feeling.

The crater is a beautiful green in colour and you can see the contrast of the little yellow flowers to give you a feel of how big it is. We were at the second lookout when we took this photo, if you look close enough, you can see the people near the edge looking down!

Poás Volcano is also active! These last few years the park has been closed because of the activity going on! Pretty exciting.

The drive to Poás from San José is about 1 1/2 hours, again depending on the stops you make along the way.  Once you arrive at the park, there are many things to do, you can visit one of the WORLD'S largest craters, walk to the lake, hike through the cloud forest or have a snack and visit the souvenir shop. I definitely recommend the crater, it's amazing!

By the way, look for an image of Bart Simpson with a goatee and sunglasses in the background, how it got there is a mystery. Can you see him?!
