Tyson & Jasmine Visit Uncle Mauro's Finca

One spring day, Mommy said she had a surprise for us.

Jasmine and I were very excited but Mommy wouldn’t say anything. A surprise is a surprise.

Mommy finished packing the car and told us to hop in. Yippee!!  We were going for a ride, but where?  After a very, very long drive we finally arrived.

"Mommy! Mommy! Where are we?" Jasmine and I shouted.

"Well, we are at Uncle Mauro’s finca. We’ve been trying to visit but there hasn’t been much time." Mommy Answered.

"Mommy, what’s a finca??" I asked.

"A finca is a farm in Spanish. We will be learning lots of Spanish words today. It will be lots of fun! Are you ready?" Mommy replied with a smile on her face.

"Yeah!" Jasmine and I shouted as we both jumped up and down.

"It’s a shame Daddy couldn’t come." I said.

"I know Tyson but he had a very important meeting, he’ll come the next time. I promise." Mommy said.

"Mommy look at the pigs. They’re playing in the hay. That looks like fun." Jasmine said.

I roared, "Hey look, there’s Uncle Mauro and Aunty Ann!!"

"Hi everyone!" They shouted back.

We got lots of hugs and kisses.  It was a very long time since we saw them.

They looked very happy.  We told them about the long car ride and how Mommy wouldn’t tell us where we were going.  It was a big surprise.

"Uncle Mauro, how do you say pig in Spanish?" Jasmine asked.

"Cerdo." He replied.

"That sounds funny!" I added.

"Who wants to see the rest of the finca?" Questioned Aunty Ann.

"I do! I do!" Jasmine and I sang out.

"Well, lets go then." Aunty Ann and Uncle Mauro smiled.

The first stop were the chickens.  They were standing around doing nothing really, some were eating and some were looking at us wondering who we were.  They looked really funny.

"Do you know how to say chicken in Spanish?" Asked Uncle Mauro.

Mommy replied, "Gallina or Pollo!"

"Wow, Mommy can speak Spanish. That’s cool!" I added.

"Now let’s go this way. By the pond we have a family of ducks living there. Guess how you say duck in Spanish?" Aunty Ann asked.

"I don’t know, I give up." I said. "How?"

"Pato. Daffy Duck is Pato Lucas! Funny don’t you think?" Replied Uncle Mauro.

It was a big family of ducks.  There was the Mom and Dad and there were 5 baby ducks.  Some were playing in the pond and some looked a bit afraid of the pond. They were very cute.

As we walked away from the duck pond, we started to go downhill. Jasmine and I decided to roll down the hill.  That was so much fun.  I had grass all over me, and Jasmine had flowers in her hair.  We looked really funny.  We rolled down the hill really quickly.  We made it down before all the adults.  We had a chance to look around.  There was a trellis with purple flowers, it was very pretty.  There were butterflies and bees too!

"Watch out, Jasmine!" I shouted.

I didn’t want her to surprise the bees.

"Look!" Aunty Ann cried. "Mariposas y Abejas! They’re beautiful! Watch out guys!"

"Let’s go to the barn. El granero. It’s just around the corner." Uncle Mauro said. "We have a few more animals in there too. Come on let’s go."

The barn was big.  It was red and dark red.  I guess Uncle Mauro likes the colour red.  The doors in the front had pieces of wood on top of it which were white. Just above the door there was a small window with some hay spilling out. It was a really pretty barn.  I can’t wait to see inside.

It was a bit dark inside but once we opened the doors, the sunshine came in.

It was a pretty barn.  It was also very big.  There is a bottom floor, where all the animals live and sleep.  There is also a top floor where Uncle Mauro and Aunty Ann have their office.  There is a big desk, a chair on wheels, lots of photographs of people (there is even one of Jasmine and I), a computer, a telephone and a fax machine. They even have a couch and a television set.

Pretty neat stuff.

As we walked in a bit further we could hear all the animals talking.  On the left side of the barn there was a cow.  Actually there were more in the pasture eating the grass and hay.  I think this cow wasn’t hungry.

"Look, there’s a rabbit and a baby chicken in the corner!" I yelled over the sound of the animals.

"Wow! A cow, a rabbit and a baby chicken! I want one Mommy!" Cried out Jasmine.

"Look over there," said Mommy, "Uncle Mauro is over there with his horse."

She pointed in the direction of where he was.  Jasmine and I ran over to him.

It was a really pretty horse.  It was light brown with a dark brown tail.  Aunty Ann braided it’s tail with a blue ribbon.  What a neat idea.

"Can we ride it Uncle Mauro?" I asked.

"No, not yet Tyson. You need to be much bigger. For now you can feed her some grains." Uncle Mauro said.

"O.K. Thanks Uncle Mauro." I said.

Mommy asked, "So, how do you say the names of all the animals that we have seen in the barn in Spanish?"

Aunty Ann replied, "Vaca, conejo, gallina y caballo."

"So kids, did you have fun on your first tour of the finca?" Uncle Mauro asked.

"Yes! We had lots of fun! We’re hungry!" Jasmine and I shouted.

"Let’s go then." Said Mommy.

We walked up to the house, Uncle Mauro was going to make some pasta. Yummy!  We love pasta.  As well as having a farm Uncle Mauro is a Chef.  Aunty Ann helps him in the restaurant too.  She set up the table real pretty.

We each had a different coloured napkin, wrapped around it was an old spoon.  Aunty Ann said she couldn’t use them anymore so she used it for a decoration instead of throwing it out!  Good idea.  Lunch was delicious.  Uncle Mauro is a very good cook.

We had a wonderful afternoon.  I hope next time when Daddy comes we can sleep over!  That would be lots of fun.

"Tyson, Jasmine!!" Called Mommy. "It’s time to go."

As we were saying good-bye their dog and cat came to say good-bye too. They were very nosy, they wanted to go into the car but Uncle Mauro wouldn’t let them.  Aunty Ann put them back into the house.  They watched everything from the window.  I told you they were very nosy.

"Guess what? Dog is perro and cat is gato."

Again lots of hugs and kisses.  We are not sure when we will see them again.

It was a fun day all around.

"Good-bye! Adios!" Uncle Mauro and Aunty Ann yelled.

They both waved to us good-bye.  As the car pulled out of the long finca driveway, Jasmine and I fell asleep.
