I am actively involved in the Students Union activities, particularly that of the International Relations Committee, one of the standing committees of the Union. Known for short, as NUSSU IRC (no, we are not a internet relay chat!), we organize activities for international students on campus, as well as host foreign student delegations from other academic institutions overseas. It is tiring, stressful and fun. We quarrelled, threatened bloody murder, joked, gossiped and played the fool. It has been a wonderful two years!

Hyogo Summer Exchange-On-Sea - Every year, Japanese students from Hyogo will visit Singapore on a ship which serves as a floating university. We host them in the day at NUS, giving them a tour of campus as well as entertaining with a concert showcasing the diverse cultures of Singapore. At night, the Japanese students play host on their ship, where a delicious buffet dinner is served and we were shown various aspects of Japanese culture, from their music to their martial arts. Here are the members of the Singapore delegation, all dressed to the nines. |

International Students Nite 99/00 - An important event in our calendar is the International Students Month, which is held every January. Consisting of four events: Orientation, Food Fest, Bazaar and IS Nite, it is one of most stressful periods in our term of office. The cumulation of all that hard work is the IS Nite, which is a concert put up by international students, with performances ranging from Chinese dance to Italian songs to Malay silat. See the two girls in ethnic costumes? The girl in the pants is Hui Kun, our committee chaiperson, the other girl is Jenny, one of our committee members. They presented a Peruvian dance, which was taught to them by a teacher from the Peruvian Embassy, and it was received with much applause. |
| International Students Month Orientation - The sign-up booth that we set up during the first event of the International Students Month. We were promoting the Food Fest here, as can be seen by all the posters of yummy foods. And just in case you wonder why there are no photos of Food Fest and Bazaar, that's because somebody's camera went on strike and didn't perform. Sigh..... | ![]() |
