Dear Family:

I was trying to sort my references by "work" and "friends" when it dawned on me that ... In the world of being an "Au Pair" and "serving" those family's, homes, and projects ~ those you work for become your friends.  More importantly, they become friends for life.  Having an Au Pair is like accepting a new family member.  I wrote my references out in a non-formal “resume” form to give you a better insight to the various positions I served and of my vast personal experience over the years.
I write like this to reveal the respect I have for the people herein and my relationship to each ~ as we labored in the fields of love together.

The following are a list of those who know me best.  They will provide you with my personal reference to your complete satisfaction.  They will also provide you reference to my character, work ethics & the quality of standards in which I live ~ along with a large array of my gifts, talents, and abilities ~ that enable me to provide you, your home, and your children with the best, safest, and highest quality care you could hope to receive.  Just about everyone on my reference list has known me most of my entire adult life and some since I was a teenager.  They all know my strengths and weakness as a human being and the level of character in which I work and the dedication in which I serve those I have committed to.  I have worked along side of each of them and worked for all of them at one time or another.

Ret.Lt. Col. Dr. Kenneth Edwards & Rosali Edwards.
Founders of the
Beulah Retreat & Conference Center
(Refered to as "Beulah" and/or BRACC)
PO Box 507

(Letter of Reference attached to your email)

Ask for "Sister Rosali” when you call.   Dr. Edwards (Chap) will be just as happy to talk with you yet he seeks any avenue to give the phone to his wife, Rosali.
I would wish that he would speak to you and if you do catch him he is a real pleasure to talk to and he acknowledges my years of service as faithful.  You will find that Rosali will lay it all out there for you and get to her point.  Depending on her mood that day, she will either be sharp, formal, and “seemingly” cold or she will be warm and friendly picking out from the reservoir of memory the grandest things to reveal the gift of God in me.  She is the Founder of Beulah Retreat & Conference Center (BRACC) where I worked for many years, and can give you an accurate account of my commitment to work and children and home life.

The accolades of these two would take an entire book to fill.  Dr. Chaplin Edwards ("Chap") has served in career military, President of the Board for BRACC, been a faithful Pastor of his own church at "Healing Waters" in Pittsboro, NC and Bible teacher in Sanford, NC and all over the Continent of Africa, Europe, and America.  Rosali Edwards is a bible scholar, retired nurse, nutritionist, and missionary. Born of missionary parents in Jamaica, and residing now in America.  She implanted deep within me the importance of taking care of the complete person; body, soul, and spirit.  I include them in my reference and character letter because they know me deeply.  She has personally influenced me with international culture and to respect the diversity of people throughout the world, and she was the one who kick started my love for cooking with her famous “recipe box” in the Retreat House Kitchen.  I served and worked diligently for them over the years and they know my hard work, determination, and loyalty given to those I serve (when I am in agreement with the “mission”).  Through the years of intimate working and living with each other, the usual head butting would visit us occasionally as I was always the one to have to surrender due to age, but that didn’t change the fact that I would toss a cup of sugar in the corn bread when walking by Carmesia’s mixing bowls while we worked side by side in the kitchen for many years.  (Carmesia is also listed on my reference list)   I labored many of my early years in the kitchen and even snuck that recipe box to a Xerox machine before moving off to Arizona.

I was invited by Pastor Joseph Tumpkin to work in Youth Outreach & Evangelism in his church located in Sierra Vista, AZ - just 40 minutes north of Mexico. I left BRACC to serve in the Tumpkins ministry (Shiloh Christian Center) with the Edwards blessings and in much praise from them at my speedy growth for someone so young.  I was in AZ from 1986 to 1989 yet still flying back and forth to NC to work summer camps at BRACC or to attend "Work Week, and special events..

Ken Edwards is a retired Army Chaplin and he and his wife ran BRACC in a tight knit functioning fashion with many loyal staff members by their side for many years.  I served in child care, in the kitchen, on the 77 acre of rural property grounds (lots to “do”), participated in summer camps programs, went to school, and helped run the seasonal retreat schedules.

I first stepped foot on the (BRACC) property at eighteen years old and became a full time staff member by age nineteen.  On my first tour (1983-1986) at the center I Au Paired 13 children while the other staff members worked various positions at the center.  I was a new mother myself.  There were three caregivers for that load of children: Cindy, "Sunshine" (Judy), and myself.  I don't remember the exact ages of every child but I do remember that 5 were in diapers, and two were enrolled in school a year or so after my arrival.  I learned to cook at the center and have had a very large international experience and exposure to culture, music, and ministry while there.  For those who used the services the center provided were from all over the world and all over America.  I also learned that work and play are very similar when you enjoy what you do in your valued position.  I grew to love home activities and homemaking while under the wing of the environment at Beulah.  High quality character traits entered me while there and have not left me since.

I returned to the center and married there.  We both served another three years before moving to Tulsa. ~ Faithful & loyal was my known “thread” and was proven through my position towards Beulah over the years and my constant support and labor demonstration.

My second tour at Beulah (with my husband) was to work retreats and summer camp and taking care of children and driving the children back and forth to school and meal preparations.  Many little ones that were not in school yet were at the center.   However, the ones that went to school, needed after school care, help with homework, and snack/meals.  I experienced long and busy days.  I provided childcare, and also performed many other duties.  Animal husbandry, gardening, grounds keeper public relations, and welcome committee (trained new staff). Beyond the requirements of daily “class” ~ I also participated in the milking of the goats (playing with recipes on how to make yogurt, butter and cheese.  We canned vegetables with a crew from staff during harvest seasons at a cannery, learned how to tend sheep, work the land, gardening, hunting and fishing were a part of the “norm” at Beulah.  The experience at Beulah was an unending adventure of learning and knowledge and growth as a human being and as the person of excellence I was to become.  I will leave out the building projects and hide the fact that I can build a home or assist in most every level from foundation to roof.  Don’t want you to get any bright ideas for me.
:)

I obtained various positions of great value to add to my repertoire of multi-gifted human being profile.  A three-year period of time was spent in NJ after AZ.  I served also in ministry there (The East Coast for Jesus Ministries) and worked in the secular world as well.  My main duties were in Youth Outreach Ministries as I part time worked for Burlington County School District, and had my own house cleaning company serving upper class families of Morristown, NJ.  I then moved on to work for the Ritz Carlton Hotel as Concierge in downtown Philadelphia; just over the bridge from my Riverside, NJ home.

My last tour at Beulah was not long ago after I had married, divorced and suffered through another relationship.  I did finally graduated college in between all the "ministry" and mothering.. I returned to the center after being exposed to the world of grant writing as I worked at the State Department of Commerce in Tulsa Oklahoma in the International Protocol Office.

I decided to return to Beulah (1999) and serve once more with my newly found gifts and to “lick my wounds” of broken relationships while serving joyfully. This time around, I found the Center had changed hats and was not full of Staff like before.   Something had happened in my absence that I was grieved over but we all tried to put back in place ~ The Vision ~ of the Center. I served on the Advisory Board and was the Grants Coordinator.  I ended up getting a job in a nearby town at a Charter School and also serving my local high school as I wrote grants for the Center, and ran the donations division and home school program after our teacher moved on in her career.  I had to “work” outside of the Center and my loyalties became divided ~ so the last 2 years of the total 16 years were not set as a “sole servant” to BRACC (It's "new" name was born as a 501 (c) 3).  However, due to needing a source of income that was stripped from the Staff members - for there was not enough financial means to pay us a salary I had to take employment positions off property while still juggling the tremendous work load there.  The Center was going through a complete makeover and I was on staff during these "make-over years.”  Three of the original families that served in the 1980’s all returned around the same time to bring BRACC back to a standing position. Much physical labor was required of me as the renovation of buildings was priority.  Lots of “getting dirty” days ... laying foundations, wearing mask & suit to spray popcorn ceilings, roofing, back hoeing, grading, getting donated products and building material then implementing them on property in the form of new floors, storage units, wood sheds, and repairs.  Lots of grounds work and still home school program every morning and afternoon.  I think I even ran a tractor into my house once.  Anyway… building and restoring BRACC was my only priority for two complete years and then working in other employments positions simultaneously afterwards.  Lots of work to do and juggling in the kids along side of it all  (most were now in their teen years and learning these trades) so it worked wonderfully.  I was on board with BRACC during many years of hard work... but, I have never ending energy; a gift I treasure and play hard with.

Where to begin with Peta-Gaye?  She has been all over the world studying and holding many hats of talent, and she is a gift to the world.  She is no stranger to running offices and programs of great worth and value.  From the Drama Teams she directed over the years to singing and ministry herself ~  to running a department in a corporate finance company, Peta-Gaye is a voice worth hearing..
Peta-Gaye (Pete) has worked with me over the years and was my direct supervisor during my last work years at the center.  She has known me since age eighteen and I have had the opportunity to teach her children in a home school program, work under her in the office and keeping work and order as paramount at the center with boundless functions to perform. Couples Retreats, School, Y.E.S. Camps,  and the property "make over" the center went through all under her leadership.  She is a wonderful, lovely human being and her opinion towards me would be of great value to you in an honest frank, matter of fact manner.  She has her own live in Au Pair, Suzie, and I have aided and befriended Suzie as well as Pete's Family over the years.  Au Pairing is nothing new to the circle of friends and co-workers I surround myself with and you will be blessed by each of them as you connect with my references.

Mr. and Mrs Butler own and operate the Lisalotte Rest Home in Pittsboro, North Carolina.
I have "worked" on and off for the Butlers over the years (since 1985).  We have become dear friends and I am considered part of the "family" when present.  If I were ever in trouble and needed anything in life they are probably the family I would call. They have four kids of their own (now grown) and over 30 foster children that have made "home" with them over the passed 20 years.  I have served their family when the kids were little and when the foster kids brought on extra duties.  I Au Paired and became a "family member" myself as their home is always a place to share in the responsibilities of endless homemaking, and family meals are shared often.  There is lots of laughter, crafts and hard work on the Butler farm.  I took care of the children on their property and even tended to their grand children (now grown).  I lived in their home, and traveled abroad with Natalie and family members.  I loved to cook in the Bulter's kitchen and show off some grand burrito or mid east meal, which Walter, probably would not even try.  Walter is a "Country Boy" and he'd just as well have meat & potatoes and garden veggies.  But, I did serve at his rest home in taking care of elderly residents and in the kitchen.  I faithfully performed the overnight shift and when they go out of town and on family vacations would stay behind and "hold the fort down".  Until the NC State Laws changed and I was no longer "allowed" ~It became that someone with proper "nurse" schooling do those tasks.  I still loved on the elderly there with massage therapy, worked on their legs and feet, gave baths and cooked in the kitchen.  Caretaker of the elderly and children while with the Butlers was the daily activity.  They know my level of love and commitments and that I try to live as a woman of excellence.  I would hope that you ask for Natalie when you call though.  Walter may take a bite of his tobacco, sit on the front porch swing sipping sweet tea telling you how I "sabotaged" his tractor at least once a summer .. for every time I got on it something always managed to go wrong.  I didn't really sabotage it, but he may talk like that about me ~ and you'd never be able to tell when he's joking or being for real by his straight faced ability to tell a story.  I've known him over 20 years and I still can't tell when he's goofing off.

Mamma Faith (as I call her) is the woman who taught me how to be a mother.  She taught me how to be a teacher.  She captured my heart when I was 19 years old and so desperately in need of  a strong woman (mother figure) to show me how to be what I needed to be;  To love and teach and train children; so that they would become thinking little people who walk in understanding and conscience.  Mamma Faith has served as an Au Pair herself and in many nations.  She is a missionary and my spiritual mother.  Sometimes she forgets that I did grow up along the way and I was almost afraid to include her on my reference list because when you call her... she will be brutally honest .. telling all my success and failures.  I never know which tales of my life she will choose to share, and I am biting my lip fretfully at which part of me she will expose next.  (smiles).  She is the most insightfully acquainted reference as to my very nature.  You perhaps, will not get off the phone without her touching your heart deeply.  You will also envy the fact that I have been nurtured by someone so wonderful.  She also is the only one on this list who will be surprised to hear from you (perhaps Laura too) on account of I couldn't get a hold of her (missions in Africa) and If she ever had a computer to email.. she wouldn't know how to turn it on.  She is elderly but you wouldn't know it.  Her opinion counts and I wouldn't do a thing of any great importance in life w/out consulting her. If I ever needed her I simply call and say so.. and shortly thereafter she would be on a plane to come visit.  That's just the way it is.

While at Beulah Retreat & Conference Center, "Mamma" Faith Scott was the one who mentored me (and 2 other young girls) in the daily "job" we performed as child care takers for the other staff members children who worked at the facility.  She knows what a blast I have with kids and of my deep commitments.  I learned from the best at a very young age and am proud to call her "Mamma.".
She will also keep you on the phone to find out "how are you doing darling?"
And you won't want to hang up.

I returned to the Center later in life when I was an adult and cared for my "Mamma."  At the same time worked there.

Kathy is the eldest daughter of Natalie and Walter Butler. She is a beautiful woman and you will find her listed on God's "tough girls" list.  She is a registered nurse and a care giver serving many different fields through the years in that industry.  She is precious and has also known me for many years.  She is grown now but I often times took care of her when she was young and her children in later years.  I have known her from 1984 to present day and am still on a "What's up?" basis with Kathy as we live in different states that doesn't seem to create a wall in our love or concern for one another. She has two precious children that I would often times take care of for her and would also take them to BRACC's Summer Camp while I was working the program.   Cooking for festivities and personal dinner engagements performed for Kathy and husband.

Karlene Turrentine is an wife, mother, & attorney that would require my services on and off while I was a North Carolina resident.  Sometimes parents just need help with their home and children when daily life and work get too overwhelmingly busy.  I have known her children since they were babies but taken care of them in their home through 1999 through 2003 more as their schedule required it more.  Cooking, cleaning, playing, helping with homework, and caring over their children. Having the kids spend weekends at my house was a blast too.
I had my own home to live in but would drive to Raleigh to help whenever possible.  Whether it was just a weekend to care over the kids or to clean out the garage, or to just get away.   We have known each other since we were both 18 years old.   The Turrentine's also consider me "family," and we have all shared vacations and other events and holidays together as well.
Karlene will be happy as will all my references to speak with you concerning me, my abilities and trustworthy nature. If Karlene is not home, feel free to talk to the teenager who may answer the phone, MkKenzie.  She may just give you what you look for in that she is one of the children I cared for, and still my "little buddy" today.  Matthew is away at college so you can just find him listed on my written references page.

Some mothers simply do not let their children be babysat.  Janeen is that kind of Mom.
Aside from their "Nana" watching the children, I pretty much am their only child care provider at this time..  And I love love love them just like my own son, Seth.  Her children are my god children.  We learn love, faith, and endurance while with each other.  That's for sure !!  Because Janeen has battled health issues most of her adult life, I have seen miracle after miracle in the very presence of her friendship still alive in my world.  Her and I were both sick at the same time battling similar health "demons". Janeen juggles keeping up her business from home, her day to day home "chores", her meal preparations and her school aged children play, homework, squawbles, and activities.  She is a multi-tasker that needs occasional help.  I lived with them for a time and now have my own home, yet I stay over night lots and play with the kids almost daily now.
Meal preparations are my favorites over there.. and I am going to boast that.. any person that can know me since high school and still be hanging on.. must be a great character reference with reliable information to provide you with.  Again, Janeen is one who knows all my weaknesses as well as strengths and she won't mind sharing them both with you as I have instructed all my references to share both sides..  We are simply ourselves around each other.  Nice to have friends like that !!
Wish we all had that to boast of.

Carmesia is one of the mothers of four of the children I cared for when they were in diapers. Jeri Dena, Benjamin, Jeremy, and Michael.  I am convinced she knows me enough to giggle her way through telling you, "you are getting more then you bargained for with "little" Mary."  I stayed in touch on and off over the years and returned to work at the Center when Carmesias family also returned to work and live at the Center.  I home schooled her children when our full time teacher left, and played often with her kids spending good quality time as "family" and much laughter was shared.  She is a nurse and caretaker herself and will be happy to have you call or email inquiring about me.

Jeri is now grown and going to college to become a nurse like her Mamma.  Her and I have a very endearing relationship/friendship that began when she was four, and now she is I think twenty-five.  I asked her to write you a letter about what it was like having me in her life growing up and into young adulthood.  I am sure she will take a week or so to get to it.  Busy with school work.

Dr. Pristell was the senior Principal at the Charter School (Provisions Academy) where I taught and served as Office Administrator. (1999-2003).  I taught Computer Tech., Spanish, and a Life Skills classes to a pretty rough group of kids.   I was her right arm at the Charter and ran the administration side of the school; as well as every aspect of student relation and contact..
She would love getting a call from you and will probably have a lot to say, although I can't be sure what it will entail.

I catered her home functions and many outside of school and extra curricular activities as well as recruiting students from "the streets" (drop outs), and she is a direct line of information to provide you with how I deal with small children and teens as our Charter ran through 12th grade.
