Border Collies as Pets

Many Border Collie enthusiasts cringe at the very thought of the breed doing anything other than herding sheep and cattle.  In fact some breeders refuse to sell their dogs to anything but a working home.  This view, however noble, is clearly unrealistic.  Today the reality is that the vast majority of Border Collies become family pets, but as such they have somewhat of a mixed record.  An honest appraisal of your lifestyle before getting a Border Collie will not only save you a lot of heartache but will ensure all our dogs find suitable homes.

Border Collies are highly active and this activity level is retained well into their teens.  The label “couch-potato is just not in their lexicon!  They are also highly social and crave human companionship so if you have little in the way of time to give to a dog, the Border Collie is not for you.  They need to be mentally and physically challenged.  The breeds herding instinct, high energy levels and quick mind are all traits that can frustrate the less skilled owner.  In pet environments with experienced owners who give them the structure love and fellowship they crave Border Collies do make superb pets. Over the years a great deal of versatility has been bred into the dog and so their strong desire to work can be channeled into any number of different activities. The Border Collie’s speed and athletic ability allow it to excel at agility and fly-ball; their sharp eye enables them to dominate in Frisbee catching competition; their sense of smell make them ideal Tracking and Search and Rescue dogs and there communicative nature make them unsurpassed in the obedience ring.  It is the latter that also makes them the best companion animal of all if you are willing to put anything approaching an equal amount of energy into the relationship. In our opinion there is no other breed that affords such loyalty, devotion and trust in man, qualities that are so much the trademark of today’s Border Collie.
