Why CD's and how do they work?

Compact discs are durable, convenient, and easy to carry and store. They also can hold alot of information. CD's store information digitally, which allows for more information in a compacted space. The information can be sound or image. And there is realism in the reproduction of information. Also play does not deteriorate information transmittal.

Under normal conditions a CD can last a lifetime without a problem. Older sound and video methods are subject to deterioration every time they are used. For example, when a needle passed over the vinyl record groove it actually cut the groove deeper and wider eventually causing extensive loss of sound. Basically the same thing happens to the magnetic tape of cassette tapes.

CD digital information does not deteriorate. It is never actually touched by a mechanism. The basic structure of a CD: the digital information is a thin section coated with a clear polycarbonate protective layer backed by a reflective mirror-like surface. The information is "read" by a laser that passes through the polycarbonate surface and is bounced back to the play equipment by the mirror back. Hence CD technology is a growing media and will be around for a long time.
