Marikina
joined the World in its celebration of the International Earth
Week from April 19-23, 2004. The event kicked off with an
inspiring speech from Cabinet Secretary Elisea Gozun of the
Department of Environment and Natural Resources. A foot parade
followed which was participated by government employees and
citizens alike. A week-long exhibit was staged at the River
Park Base of the Parks and Recreations Office along the Marikina
River.
One of
the highlights of the affair is the launching of the waste
segregation mascot and the “Name the Mascot Contest”
which is open to all Marikina residents. The mascot represents
a trash bag with two different colors; pink (for non-biodegradable)
and green (for biodegradable). Cash prize awaits the winning
entry and non-winning entries will be raffled for special
prizes.
Other
activities are nightly film showing at the River Park. There
are also seminars on biodiversity and zero waste on April
20 at the Youth Camp. For details contact the Public Information
Office tel. nos. 646-6451 / 646-2360 or the Parks and Recreation
Office tel. no. 681-2130.
