In Rome, we stayed at the Hotel Alexandra, on via Veneto. What an experience it was to visit the Roman ruins! Things we only read about in school finally came to life. The Sistine Chapel was also amazing. We were told by a friend that "while in Rome, you must dine at Santo Padre." It's a good thing we took their advice. At this simple restaurant of the "locals," we experienced food only true Romans were fortunate enough to enjoy. No menus. We just sat down and let them serve us the freshest mozzarella, herbed sheeps milk cheese, anchovie marscapone, marinated tomatoes, the tenderest veal meatballs, hand-sliced prosciutto and a delicious liver puree (like paté). And that was just the antipasti. For the pasta course, they served us homemade ravioli with two sauces, fresh tomato and a sage butter. The main course was braised beef stuffed with vegetables. For dessert, we sampled the tiramisu and the chestnut tart. All washed down with a generous carafe of Frascati.
