How we met Peter first met Mann in May 1996 at Vinny Testa's in Newton. Several friends gathered to celebrate the birthday of a mutual friend. Peter was already seated at the table when Mann arrived late with their friend Wayne. After a brief introduction, the conversation just flowed. Peter did notice something about Mann that reminded him of a friend of his, named Linh, whom he had lost touch with. It turned out that Mann was Linh's sister. What a small world! Although Peter had visited Linh's home, he never met Mann. Often, Peter arrived as Mann was leaving, or vice versa. How we came together In March 1997, Peter threw a going-away party for a friend. Mann was invited, but she brought along a surprise guest. This guest was Linh, visiting from Florida, where she was living with her husband Steve and son Brendon. During the next few weeks, the devilish Linh turned to matchmaking to bring Mann and Peter together. Linh told Peter that Mann "liked" him and even gave him Mann's phone number. Meanwhile, she told Mann that Peter "liked" her. Then one day, while Peter was flying back to Boston from a business trip to Indianapolis, he glanced out his window and saw Hale-Bopp Comet (for more on Hale-Bopp, visit www.halebopp.com). The view of the comet was mesmerizing. As he sat there thinking about his life, he decided that it was time to move on. Although they were just friends, the time was right to take this friendship to the next level. That weekend, Peter and Mann went on their first date to Villa Francesca in the North End. Needless to say, the date went well. Over the next few months, their friendship blossomed into love. How Peter proposed In September 1997, Mann threw a surprise birthday party for Peter. Unbeknownst to Mann, Peter found out about the surprise through some misdirected emails. Peter decided to spring a surprise of his own. He called his brother Warren and after proving that he really did know about the surprise, convinced Warren to be his accomplice. Warren's role was to wrap the engagement ring in his birthday present to Peter. On the day of the party, as Peter opened his last present (from Warren of course), he took out the ring, got on one knee and proposed. Everyone was surprised, especially Mann as the tears rolled down her cheeks. She said, "Yes." The rest is history. Fittingly, Linh and Warren served as Matron of Honor and Best Man, respectively. |
