Objective

This project aims at developing the children of the poorest specially the children of the drug peddlers to a level from where they can pursue a respectable career and provide sustenance both for themselves and their family. This will help them come out of the shackles of illiteracy and lead a life free of the menace of the drug mafia. It conducts social, educational and family planning awareness program for the slum women so that they do not get involved in activities like drug trafficking, drug peddling & bootlegging. Basic training is imparted irrespective of caste and creed, to save all especially the girl child, to show them the way to a dignified and socially acceptable life.

Project period.

The project started in 2001 and since then has made rapid progress thanks to the devoted people working with SHM and the generous patrons who have taken care to finance its needs.

Source of Funding

The project is funded till date by generous patrons, which include eminent personalities like Mrs. Lee Alison Sibley and Mr.Ramesh Kacholia both of them send their personal support as well garner support for SHM from their friends and well wishers. Besides the locals also put up a decent effort to run the project in terms of contributing whatever little possible. However these funds are available on a take as you need basis and they are irregular too.

Project cost

At present the project is roughly estimated at Rs. 30,000 per month. This is apart from the expansion a plan that we have in mind, which will of course require separate funding.

Area Covered and profile of the people helped

This project addresses the needs of people who live in and around the Tikiapara, Howrah slum. Presently 380 children are studying here most of whom are working children or school dropouts in the age group of 5-15 years.

Activities

The entire project is primarily divided into 3 parts:

bullet Running formal school for three hours daily on weekdays for underprivileged children
bullet Non-Formal educational program for working girls, school drop outs & their illiterate parents school for two hours daily on weekdays
bullet Non-Formal education program for the adult working women & sponsored children school for two hours daily on weekdays.

As of now, it has two centers housing 380 students. These students are given primary education till the fourth standard after which they are sent to government schools to continue their studies. There is provision for guardian’s meeting every month to track the performance of the students. A new scheme of giving mid-day-meals to encourage more student participation is in the pipeline, which will be executed if funds permit.
