LALIBELLA
Lalibella is the home of  the  remarkable monuments from the 12th and 13th centuries. There are 11  rock hewn churches carved out of single, solid rocks.
Legend has it that in the 12th century , King Lalibella
of the Zagwe dynasty built the churches with the help
of angels. King Lalibella dreamt that he was taken to heaven by angels , where God ordered him to build churches.
These churches are carved out into the hillside, each of the churches are interconnected by a series of passages , stairways, and openings carved in the rock.
The largest of these churches is Bet
Medhane Alem .  Bet Golgotha and
Bet Michael are interlinked , and house
the Sillassie Chapel . The cross shaped
church  , deep in the pit is Kidus Giorgis.
The interior of the churches are decorated with many beautiful 13th century icons.
