| Blue Nile River , locally known as Abbay ,originates in Ethiopia's Lake Tana.Lake Tana is the largest lake of Ethiopia.Its surface covers 3,670 square kilometers, its maximum depth is 14 m.The reputed source of the Blue Nile is Gilgel Abbay (Little Abbay) , which rises out of the lake near Mount Amedamit. Near Bahir Dar,the lake is dammed by a lava barrier over which the Blue Nile pours, dropping 42 meters to form the spectacular Tisisat Falls. |
| Tisisat , literally "Smoke of Fire", is most impressive during the rainy season.Water cascade over the cliff face and into a gorge, creating spectacular rainbows. The Blue Nile, Abbay , flows for 800 kilometers within Ethiopia to meet the White Nile in Khartoum to form the great River Nile, the longest river. |
| Abbay flows in part through a deep gorge . The Blue Nile Gorge is majestic and has a magificient natural beauty. There are about 37 islands scattered around Lake Tana ; where we can find fascinating churches and monastries. Some of the churches are Tana Cherkos, Dega Estifanos, Debre Mariam and Kidane Meheret .Most of the religious places are closed to women. |
