Managed to spend a bit of time on the cabinet today. My
spare monitor was unearthed from it's resting home in the
attic and set aside for installation in the cabinet.
First things first, I removed the swivel base mount from the
monitor.
A quick size up showed me that it would be a great fit behind
the cabinet glass.
I removed the existing interior wooden framework (which has
left four holes in the sides of the cabinet) and cut two
wooden batons.
The main glass leans back slightly so drawing a line from the
glass retaining frame allowed me to install my batons at the
appropriate angle so hopefully the monitor face will sit
snugly behind the glass with only a couple of millimetres gap.
The pictures below show the three main stages,
the installed batons, the monitor sat on a temporary shelf (to
be replaced with a piece of MDF and finally the glass
installed with the sliding shelf still functional.
Keen eyed visitors will notice the clever cut-out at the
bottom of the lower glass mount. This allows you to
raise the glass, and then slide it out towards you for clean
glass removal.
I popped to one of my local DIY stores and
purchased a can of matt black paint to paint monitor edges and
my little brother came to see me and kindly supplied me with the
Plastikoat
for gloss finish on metalwork.
While I was in the DIY store I looked at various samples of Fablon for the final covering of the cabinet.
I will use this self adhesive covering to cover over the old
aged timber.
