What Do Christians Believe?

Christians do not claim that those who wrote the books of the Bible were always accurate in everything they said. We simply believe that the Bible is right when it claims that God guided these people in that task, in such a way that the result is an infallible book. For example we can see in those Books that are known as the Gospels that the apostle Peter undoubtedly said some foolish things during his lifetime, yet God did not allow him to clutter up his later writtings with that.

But Isn't The Book Inspired?

We do not know exactly how God accomplished His purpose of providing an accurate collection of Books. But 2 Peter 1:21 does give us a hint, suggestion: "No prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God."

The word "moved" in this verse is also used in Acts 27:15 to describe the way that the storm blew the ship off course across the Mediterranean. The people on board could do what they wanted, they could pray, bail or worry about being lost at sea. For it was the storm which determined their destination of Malta. In a similar manner we believe God guided the writers of Scripture to produce the message He wanted.

The Text Has Been Altered By Others

Many books have been written about the evidence for divine inspiration in regard to the Bible. The sad fact however is that most people have not read any of these books. In fact, few have even read the Bible itself! And so many people simply go along with the popular delusion that the Bible is full of mistakes, has been tampered with and so is not trust worthy.

Instead of taking the time to investigate these things for themselves, most people simply take what they are comfortable with, or that supports their preconceived ideas and quote that in defence of or to ridicule the Biblical writtings. This of course says more about the person than it does about the Biblical narrative.

The Evidence Is Massive

If anyone will actually take the time to seriously investigate the Biblical evidence, they can find that the claims of divine inspiration are numerous and truely justified.

The Number Of Authors:

This is often used as one of the main reasons why the Bible cannot be trusted. But each of those hands points to the same God, His Love for mankind and our continued dis-belief in Him. I recall reading somewhere that there are something like 3000 various ways that the different writers have claimed to be divinely inspired in there works. But to me the most telling thing is the continuity of the revelation, and the manner in which each writer discloses a little more than another, who wrote before or indeed sometimes after the previous writer.

So here we have a collection of Books written by some 40 writers over a period of about 2000 years, yet the message is the same throughout. There is a God, He cares and wants us to know it. But more than that the books actually support each other and compliment each other.

Fulfilled Prophecy:

The number of prophecies that are mentioned and fulfilled is another evidence. Literally hundreds of Biblical prophecies have been fulfilled, specifically and meticulously, and usually often long after the prophetic writer had passed away. For example, Daniel; around 538 BC (Daniel 9:24-27) wrote that Christ would come as Israel's Savior and Prince 483 years after the Persian emperor would allow the Jews to rebuild Jerusalem. This was clearly and definitely fulfilled.

There are so many prophecies dealing with nations, cities and history in general, all of which have been fulfilled. Over 300 were fulfilled when Christ Himself first came. There is absolutely no other book, that is equal to this. Prophecies of people like Nostradamus, Edgar Cayce, and others are not in the same category at all, and neither are other religious books such as the Qur'an, the Confucian Analects, and similar writings. The Bible shows this prophetic evidence, on such a scale that it renders any explanation other than divine revelation as being absurd in the least.

Historical Accuracy:

Time and time again the Biblical record has been shown to be superior to other written records of Egypt, Assyria, and other early nations. Archeological confirmations of the Biblical record have been almost uncountable within the last century. And it seems that many times when others have set out to find a fact in history, what they found is what the Bible had already said. Infact on some occassions the historical evidence was found from firstly researching the Biblical evidence to find the location of the city or place.

So then, the conclusion we are drawn to is that the Bible has not been adulterated or altered to the extent that many still claim from following popular thought and ideas. But it remains the greatest living record from the One And Only God and Creator to His creation of Himself. Accurate, reliable and trust worthy.
