Except Mark van der Loo (you met him at the homepage already)...there are quite a lot of people who are worldwide known and are Dutch or live(d) here.
FAMOUS DUTCH PEOPLE, OR THEY WHO LIVE(D) HERE
First there is Jeroen Krabbe...He's an actor...and since a few years director. He not only appeared in famous Dutch movies, like "Soldaat van Oranje" ("The Soldier Of Orange"), but also in a lot of American movies such as "The Fugitive" and "No Mercy".
And this is Paul Verhoeven, the director of the Dutch movie "Soldaat van Oranje" ("The Soldier Of Orange"), but most of you will know him from movies like "Robocop", "Shallow Man" and the infamous "Basic Instinct".
This is Rutger Hauer, an actor. He also took part in the Dutch movie (and he played the lead-role) "Soldaat van Oranje" ("The Soldier Of Orange"). But most of you propably know him from the movies "Blade Runner", "The Hitcher" and "Ladyhawke".
This is Jan de Bont....he started out as a cameraman/cinematographer in Dutch movies, like (here it is again...) "Soldaat van Oranje" ("The soldier of Orange"...like there's only one movie made in the Netherlands.LOL), and he did camera work for a lot of American movies also. But he's most known as director of "Speed" and "Twister".
After the art of movies... we go back in time....these are a few self-portraits from Vincent van Gogh.
He was a famous painter and grew up in a village near Eindhoven, Nuenen (you can see it on one of the maps of Eindhoven). In his time he wasn't recognized as an artist much (that's why he cut off one of his ears). But nowadays people pay fortunes to buy his paintings.
This is a 'Self-portrait' of Rembrandt van Rhijn...he was a recognized  artist in his time (unlike Vincent van Gogh) and painted a lot...but in the Netherlands his most famous painting is "De Nachtwacht" ("The Nightwatch") which you can see at Het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. . Rembrandt was also 'famous' to have his own face painted in massrepresentations. So you can see his face on many of his paintings.
After all this 'cultural' smalltalk we in Dutch history also had someone living here who grew out to be someone special in World War II. Although she wasn't Dutch from origin (she was from a German family, but jewish and therefor her family fled to our country), I am very proud of her, her family and her diary... Anne Frank. And although I know a lot of people going into hiding during this war didn't have 'the luxury' she had...it's really impressive to go to the 'Anne Frank house'...so whenever you're in Amsterdam...not only enjoy the great night-life of our great capital, but also pay a visit to Anne Frank's living place during the war at the Prinsengracht.
