| Choosing A Curriculum | |||||
| There are many different options to choose from when selecting a curriculum for homeschooling. New curriculums can be bought directly from a company or through discounters. Used curriculums may be obtained through used book stores, online, and from other homeschoolers. Prices vary. Most organizations mentioned here can be found on our Links page. Correspondence Schools Correspondence schools such as Calvert, Seton, and Christian Liberty Academy offer a complete curriculum and the additional benefit of maintaining a transcript for your child. Complete Curriculum Several companies including ABeka, Bob Jones, and K12 offer sets of textbooks, teachers manuals and other materials for every grade and course. Video School A Beka offers a video curriculum (videos of a teacher and class working together). Your student works along with the video to complete the assigned work. Videos and classwork are mailed back to the company for scoring and to produce a transcript. Satellite School Bob Jones offers a satellite school and provides a satellite dish and receiver along with the textbooks. Your student works along with the teacher and class via satellite to complete the assigned work. Classwork is mailed back to the company for scoring and to produce a transcript. Pre-Packaged Curriculum Among the most popular curriculum packages are those offered by K12, Alpha-Omega, and A.C.E. Alpha-Omega and A.C.E. offer complete sets of workbooks for language arts, Bible, math, science and social studies. Each course is a set of 10 small workbooks. Alpha-Omega offers a similar course on CD-ROM called Switched-On-Schoolhouse. K-12 has developed a computer-based curriculum that includes language arts, math, science, history, music and art. Unit Studies Weaver (also published by Alpha-Omega) and Konos have programs that build on a particular unit (such as the senses or "Egypt) and all course work for the language arts, science, and history focus on that subject. Math is a separate unit. This is a great way to dig deeply into a subject, but a great deal of teacher participation and preparation is required. Selecting Your Own Curriculum For the most flexibility in selecting a curriculum, you can choose any variety of material that works best for your child.
