Jackdaw Falls is a small town near the Sohcahtoa River. Jackdaw Falls also contains the major copper plating company, Magnified Plaid, Inc. Unlike some of our competitors, such as Waste or Chemtech, Magnified Plaid, Inc. is dedicated to keeping the environment clean. We are currently working on environmentally friendly solutions to disposal of our toxic wastes. Copper plating microchips is a very profitable industry in todays modern age, but there is a major problem that comes along with it: what to do with the toxic waste that is produced. Our objective was to explore different methods to try to reduce or eliminate the copper (II) chloride waste that was produced. These methods of dealing with the waste included: Dilution, Metal Replacement, Precipitation, Solidification and Fixation, and an outside vendor. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages that need to be considered in order to decide which method is the most cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly way of disposing of the waste, as well as keep the community happy.
The copper electroplating of microchips is a rather simple process. To begin, the microchips need to be negatively charged using a DC (direct current) power source. The copper that will plate the microchips needs to be dissolved in a high acid solution (often hydrochloric acid) to make a copper plating bath. The negatively charged chips, which are held by negatively charged anodes, pass through the copper bath. The positively charged copper ions are attracted to the negatively charged computer chips. Because of the attraction, the copper ions stick to the computer chips, coating them with the copper. After the plating is complete, the microchips are removed and the copper (II) chloride waste is collected and then handled accordingly.
