Magnified Plaid has a unique solution to prevent damage to the environment. Contrary to concerns voiced by local citizens, Magnified Plaid, Inc. safely and effectively disposes of any toxic chemicals that may be produced in the copper plating of microchips. Magnified Plaid is located along the Sohcahtoa River. The company electroplates computer chips. One part of a power source is connected to our computer chips and another part of the source to copper metal. Then, both the chips and copper are placed in a Copper Chloride solution. Next, the power source is activated, resulting in a copper coating on the computer chips.
Along with the computer chips, toxic waste is produced. So a process to safely and effectively use the waste to benefit Jackdaw Falls was created. Using a solidification and fixation process, the copper chloride liquid waste is isolated. Cement and Sodium Silicate are added to the copper chloride waste. This combination results in a grayish colored lumps that resemble gravel. When tested, the cement mixture holds the toxic copper chloride solution extremely well and the addition of Sodium Silicate increases the retaining power even more. A test completed at the University of Rome found the same results, . . . the addition of silica fume to the matrix causes a reduction in copper release leading immediately to a greater amount of this element being immobilized by the cement matrix. * When tested, this mixture released less than five parts per million, or ppm, of Copper Chloride solution, which is the standard level of Copper Chloride allowed to be released into the environment. A simulation with acid rain was also completed and the mixture was within government regulations. Magnified Plaids methods display their concern with keeping Jackdaw Falls free of toxic waste.
After this process is completed the gravel can be used as filler. Filler is placed down before asphalt and cement are laid. This filler can be used to help build roads, make driveways, and set foundations. Magnified Plaids solution can do this safely, keeping the environment waste-free, which is a main concern of Magnified Plaid. Magnified Plaid invites community members to contact our head safety and health manager at any time with questions or concerns. Educational tours for interested adult and student groups can be arranged through public resources department.
