Our Nepalese family
SUMMER 2002

The monsoon floods had washed out all major roads in and out the capital during our stay, so we were unable to visit the village where my sister and I had grown up. Instead, the Rawat family (picture above with us) traipsed for two days by foot through mudslides to make it to Kathmandu to see us. Kissan, the patriarch of the family, was my father's lingusitic aide as my parents translated the Bible into Tharu, a dialect of Nepalese, in the early 1970s.

On the left, Kissan and me around 1972;
on the right, Kissan and his wife today.

Pictures from my youth in Nepal.

The last time we were back in Nepal was 1983,
when we were able to go to the village.

My mom and Kissan's wife.

Jenny with Mina, Putaly, and Mina's son.

We were also able to see Malidi, our gardener ...

... and his son, who is planning to emigrate to Canada.

On the left, a Nepalese boy demonstrates the traditional "Namaste" greeting;
on the right, my sister has her nose pierced
in a Kathmandu shop, much to my horror.
