General Nepal pictures
SUMMER 2002
Tourism was off this year in Kathmandu, due to the increase in Maoist
terrorism and the assassination of most of the royal family. As a result, we were able to get great deals -- a
shopper's paradise! The city itself was amazing -- crowded, noisy, and very much like I remembered, with lots
of visual stimuli.

Name-brand stores (whose names were appropriated
without permission, of course) were everywhere.

More crowded signs vying for attention.

Notice the machete, and not a gun, that this
policewoman has on her holster.

This is the view of the capital from the air. Much of the building
in the city is ramshackle, and it constantly amazed me
that more buildings didn't just topple over.

Here we are eating in a typical Nepalese restaurant: hidden behind
the street, and served by a family who's cooking the food in their
own courtyard. All-you-can-eat meals can be had for less than $1,
and the tastes were amazing -- I never wanted to quit eating.
