The deities of today are worshipped in many ways. Before we dive into these myriad rituals, we should talk about exactly what a deity is, according to different people.

Many people think that their deity is a real or semi real being, with their own personality and life. Others will tell you the deity is another part of you. I myself [and others, of course] believe that the deity is just a symbol that is used to enhance your own magickal power, and a symbol of the things we can see. We use the deities to represent things, like everything else. They are, however, extremely powerful symbols, and should not be ignored.

Now, each individual God or Goddess has their own particular likes and dislikes [strange though it may sound]. To worship the Goddess is actually quite a simple thing. In my belief, any time you do creative work you are honouring the Goddess. There are lots of more specific rituals however, and I'll tell you a few now.

There is a well known ritual that celebrates life, sex and the God and Goddess. It is called the Cakes and Ale Ceremony. The ritual is something like this:

Cakes and Ale
Ceremony

The Cakes and Ale is a formal ritual honouring the God and Goddess and their capacity for life, creativity, love, and passion. It is a simple ritual that is full of symbolism and power. It is not about heterosexual sex - it is about potential and unconditional love.

To perform the Cakes and Ale Ceremony you will need cakes and ale, of course, your chalice, and your athame. Cakes and ale can be substituted by any food and any drink, as long as you recognize what you are doing. Take you athame [which represents Male] and dip it into your chalice [female] saying:

Chalice, you are now that which is female;
Athame, you are now that which is Male.
Conjoined you are equally empowered
and the source of all Life

In doing this you have acknowledged the God and Goddess' potential and are saying 'I honour you for your beauty and love'. You have also recognised the sacredness and beauty of the Great Rite [sex].

Then, take the athame and touch it to the cakes or food and say:

Great Mother,
Bless this food,
So that all who partake of it
May know joy and abundance

Recognise that the Goddess is Blessing the food, and feel the Goddess energy inside you [yes, even the men]. After this, pour some ale/drink onto the ground and crumble some cakes or drop some food on the ground too, as thanks to the earth for giving you such wonderful edibles.

That's all there is too it! As I said, a very simple ritual, nothing fancy needed. Please not that the Athame is not really necessary in every single thing you do. In fact, none of the tools are necessary, as all the magick is coming from inside you. You are the source, the conduit and the recipient of the effects. The tools are there as an aid and to enhance your spells, that's it. [Note: this isn't really a spell, just a ritual]. Please see the 'Tools' pages for more information on athames, chalices and more.

Now, while there are many more ways of honouring the Deity, the best ones are the ones you think up your self. I will try to give you the best knowledge to help you, but I will very rarely give you ready made rituals. Feel free to play around with the cakes and ale ceremony. Remember, its what works for you that counts.
