This is one of the most difficult pages to write. Most of the history of Wicca has been lost, because the roots of Wicca burrow into antiquity. The most recent resurgence of the craft has been in the last 50 years or so, thanks, in large part, to a man named Gerald Gardener.

It was he who first spoke out to the public about Wicca and what it is. However, not much is known about him and his doings. I cannot say much here except vague guesses and little bits of information. Wicca is a new religion. I stress this now. It is not an ancient religion, it is only based on one.

I'm afraid I have to leave it there. All I can say is that Wicca was formed much from Gerald Gardener, and if you are really keen to find out, you can go to www.geraldgardener.com and have a look at some of the [large] essays done on him.

I have some great links now! They are contradictory to everything i have learnt, but full of facts. I found them on a Wiccan message board. I strongly suggest you read them, however, there is a lot to take in, so perhaps you might want to leave it till afterwards.

After reading these you might think 'well Wicca isnt any good!'. Dont beleive that. No matter what it started out as, its very different today. Its part of your journey to learn what Wicca is.

The history of my version of paganism is even harder. It seems to have originated in the outback or country areas of ancient England and thereabouts. It was probably just woven straight off the ground when people realised that the cycles of the universe matched each other, and learned from these cycles. However, that is only a guess, and no one can really say just where when and how ancient witchcraft was started.
