Television as we knew it then....
Television shows..... seemed  to have a lasting effect
on our lives and even though some say our lives were't
really like that,  for a lot of us they were. There were some great shows on television throughout the 1950's and 1960's.Some if not all are now in syndication and can be seen at any given time of the day. This is for those who lived it and loved it. Links are provided to some great web sites.

Starting  with
Lassie because it was the television
show that made everyone want to own a Collie.
Running from 1955 to 1964,
Lassie was about a
dog and his young owner who seemed to have a
sixth sense about danger. No matter what, we knew that
Lassie would save the day. Original cast included:
Tommy Rettig as Jeff Miller, Lassie's owner. Jan Clayton played Ellen Miller, a widow and Jeff's mother and George Cleveland played Gramps.

In 1952, Ozzie Nelson took a chance by putting his whole family on television and using their real life experiences, he created,

The Ozzie and Harriet Show.
Ricky Nelson, brother David and parents Ozzie and Harriet became a part of our families. The show aired from 1952 to 1966, 14 years, and became the  longest running situation comedy in the history of television. We watched as Ricky Nelson grew up right before our eyes and became a teen idol having more than ten  top ten hits. Rick Nelson and David Nelson would get married to the women who played their girl friends and later their wives.

1954 to 1963 would bring us
Father Know Best. Jim
Anderson (
Robert Young) was a wise father who
seemed to have a handle on how to raise his three children. Together, he and his wife Margaret (
Jane Wyatt), showed us how responsible adults should act.Their children were: Betty, "Princess" (Elinor Donahue), James, "Bud" (Billy Grey) and Kathy, "Kitten" (Lauren Chapin).

One of the favorite shows ever to run on television was
The Donna Reed Show,
starring the Academy Award winning actress,
Donna Reed.
The show ran from 1958 to 1963.  Donna and Alex Stone, (
Carl Betz) a pediatrician,  and their two children, Mary (Shelly Fabares) and Jeff (Paul Peterson) were a typical family with problems just like any other family. Alex seemed to always be called away on an emergency  while major problems needed to be resolved. Donna seemed to always come up with the right solution. Paul Peterson and Shelly Fabares both became pop idols singing songs like, "Johnnie Angel" and for Paul, "My Dad".

Last but not least, one of the shorter running shows but
most popular was the
Leave It To Beaver show.
There was Beaver (
Jerry Mathers) and his brother, Wally(Tony Dow) and their father, Ward played by
Hugh Beaumont and his most loving wife, June, played
by
Barbara Billingsly. It ran from 1957 to 1963. The Beaver seemed to always get into some predicament or another and then Wally somehow got involved and before you know it, Beaver had made a bigger problem for himself. The excellent acting made the show one of America's favorite.

Well, hope you had as much fun as I did. Happy nostagia television hunting!
