Waters Upton

Still on the A518 we passed through Newport by the B5062 heading towards Waters Upton.

The road was narrow with bends and high hedges. We stopped at an opening and looked across a huge field of corn towards the Wrekin Mountain.

It was a lovely scene. The church of St Michaels at Waters Upton is between the main road and an old farm.

John's eldest sister Ann was born in the village. His mother Eleanor died here in 1829.

I looked around and wondered where they had lived and what it must have been like then. It was like stepping back in time.

We did not get to see inside the church at Waters Upton.

It was locked, and we did not have time to look up the church warden.

It is a neat church and the porch was built later in memory of a reverend who served the parish.

John Madeley, was my 3rd great grandfather and was born in 1784.

His eldest sister Ann was born in the hamlet of Waters Upton and his mother Eleanor died here in 1829.

This old farm was a kind of bonus for me as I went to the back of the church to take a photo.

It was as if I was back in the old hamlet of Waters Upton.

I expected to see an old farm labourer taking a cow to be milked by hand, or a milk-maid carrying her load on her shoulders out of the building to sell her milk.

Who had lived here, I wondered? Was it a distant relative? Time to go and set off to High Ercall.
