Fats and oils contain one glycerol and three fatty acids.  A phospholipid is a fat with one of the fatty acids replaced by a phosphate group.  Waxes and steroids are also lipids.
Cholesterol is the precursor of several steroids, including certain hormones for vertebreates.  These hormones are used to maintain male and female sex characteristics, growth, and other bodily functions.
