| A hormone is a secretion of a gland in the endocrine system. Hormones are carried through the bloodstream to various target organs where they perform important metabolic functions in cells and organs. Hormones are related to cholesterol in several ways. One of the most important way is that a certain type of hormone, a Prostglandin (a hormone not produced in any one particular gland) is responsible for the clotting of blood. Another type of Prostglandins enhances blood flow. These two functions are very important because without them, normal blood flow in the circulatory system would not be possible. These hormones are related to cholesterol because without the hormones, cholesterol would build up in the arteries of the circulatory system and cause the blood to not reach the heart to flow easily. It makes the heart work harder to pump blood, and heart attacks would be the end result. As you can see, without a sensible amount of cholesterol and the normal functioning of these two hormones, health would be affected greatly. The link between lipids and this topic (for anyone who is confused) is that certain types of lipids (steroids) include several key hormones. Hormones include the two types of Prostglandins discussed on this page. Without these Prostglandins, cholesterol would build up and affect health. This is how hormones are related they are to cholesterol and how vital they are to life. |
