Extract of part of the Will: > Bequeath the whole of my property to my 2 sons Mark Samuel and Lewis Samuel after paying the following sums to my daughter Charlotte Solomons the sum of fifty pounds for her own use her husband to have no control over it. > my son Joseph Samuel the sum of twenty pounds and i give to my daughter Ann Franklin the sum of twenty pounds, to my grandson Harris Marks the sum of ten pounds to my two grandaughters Adelaide Marks and Rebecca Marks the sum of nineteen guineas also the whole of my wearing apparel the above sum to my grandchildren to be and under the control of their father Harris Marks until they reach of age and to whom I leave the sum of ten pounds. Residence: 1851, 95 Ratcliff Highway, Wapping London. JOSEPH SAMUEL, Born about 1819 in London, Middlesex, England and died on the 22nd July 1889 in Dunedin, New Zealand. He was buried at the Southern Cemetery, Dunedin on the 23rd July 1889. Age 70 years. Reference number: S188907023.The earliest i can find Joseph in NZ is 1863 he is a Clothier 'Shop 1 in the Arcade'. By 1864 he has moved to Shops 54 & 55 in the Arcade & is a Clothier & Outfitter and has a Tarpaulin & Tent making shop in Jetty Street. He appears on the Dunedin Electoral Roll in 1865 and in 1865/6 he lives on Manse Street and is operating as a Clothier. From 1866-1871 he is on the Dunedin Electoral Roll and in 1870/1 he is listed in the wises directory as having a 'Fancy Repository' in Rattray Street & also a 'Clothier Boot & Shoe Store' in Manse Street. In 1872 he still has the Boot & Shoe store in Manse Street but the fancy repository is gone. CHARLOTTE SAMUEL, Born about 1821 in Middlesex, England and died on the 27th March 1870 at Russell St, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia (Regno 2098). She married Lewis Solomons on the 16th February 1842 at the New Synagogue, London, England. JANE SAMUEL, Born about 1821 in Middlesex, England. MARK SAMUEL, Born about 1823 in London, Middlesex, England. He married Cecilia Unknown before 1851, most likely in the USA. ANN SAMUEL, Born about 1826 in Middlesex, England. According to the Will of Amelia Samuel in 1856 she names her daughter 'Ann Franklin'. NOTE: I looked at every marriage for an Ann Samuel & this is the only one that I can see it would be: Marriages - March Quarter of 1850 - Ann Samuel to Franklin Cohen in Whitechapel - (Vol 2 Page 499). It seems her married name was Cohen not Franklin. Amelia must have been a bit confused when she wrote the Will. 1851 UK Census: 64 Long Millgate (No 27), Market Street, Manchester, Lancashire, England Franklin Cohen - Head - Married - Age 26 - Occ, Shoe Manufacturer - Born in Poland . Ann Cohen - Wife - Married - Age 23 - Occ, Shoe Manufacturer (Wife) - Born in London , England. Israel Rittinbach - Unmarried - Age 25 - Occ, Shoe Manufacturer (Partner) - Born in Poland . Jusfatins Cohen - Age 14 - Occ, Shoe Manufacturer (Shop Boy) - Born in Shropshire, Tonbridge. NOTE: The boy Jusfatins obviously is not a child of Franklin & Ann as he is too old. Amelia didnt mention any grandchildren from Ann & Franklin & this couple don't appear to have any. I can not find any trace of Ann & Franklin Cohen after the 1851 census. LEWIS SAMUEL, born about 1827 in England and died on the 10th May 1887 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He married Kate Seckleman about 1850 most likely in Sycruse, New York, USA. |
