Its location adjacent to the Breakheart reservation offers numerous scouting opportunities such as hiking & map & compass. with numerous scouting opportunities. Click here for Directions to the Camp or for a map of Breakheart Reservation.
On Saturday, the Scouts will be dropped off at the entrance of Breakheart Reservation and hike to Camp Nihan. This is only a distance of 1.2 miles but will require them to carry on their backs everything they will use for the weekend (except water - available at camp). It will be good practice concerning pack preparation, meal selection, and determining the appropriate camp gear. In the afternoon, there will be a map and compass contest through Nihan and Breakheart Reservation. The rest of the time is for the scouts to enjoy and help each other with other needed rank requirements.

Moat Mt Hike - White Mountain Adventure: 14-15 June 2003
The troop will leave from the Church parking lot at 0630 (i.e., six-thirty in the morning) on Saturday, June 14th. Please arrive by 0615 so we can pack up and get on the road. We will return to the same location at 3:30 PM on Sunday, June 15th.
Key equipment - Day pack and compass - This is not a backpacking trip - scouts will leave their camping gear behind at our campsite and only take a daypack.
We will drive up to North Conway and hike the Moat Mountain Trail. Total trail distance is 9.2 miles but with some additions at the end (Diana's Bath detour) it will bring the total trail distance to the 10 miles required to count for a hiking merit badge hike. The trip traverses South Moat Mountain, Middle Moat, and North Moat before exiting at Diana's Bath - a fun swimming location which the scouts will enjoy to terminate the hike. The most difficult part of the hike will be the first two hours due to the elevation change (see elevations in timetable below). The rest of the hike will be mostly along the ridgeline with medium elevation changes. After we summit North Moat, the terrain is mainly downhill. There is an optional route to reduce trip distance to 8.0 miles if necessary. Please be advised that while this hike is at lower elevations, it is still in the Spring in the White Mountains where the weather can change severely and suddenly. Each scout participating must have the mandatory gear listed below.
Mandatory Equipment
Wool Hat
Compass
Map (Leaders will provide)
Water (2 quarts minimum - 3 if you drink alot)
Water purification tablets (Leaders will provide if you do not have - don't buy)
Hiking boots - Broken in - do not buy new - if don't have - wear sneakers - but get those boots and start breaking them in
Rain coat - best would be an all weather lightweight coat - need mainly for wind protection and water protection second
wool shirt
Lunch
Bug spray (recommend non aerosol, scouts can share to save weight)
Whistle
Chewing gum
Optional Equipment
Camera
Water resistant gloves - needed mainly for wind, the nylon shell from 2 part ski gloves work the best
We will camp Saturday night at the Appalachian Mountain Club's Swan's Falls Campsite. This is located in Maine, about 15 miles from where we exit the trail, and a nice location right on the Saco River. Sunday will be spent either at the campsite (Saco River) or North Conway..

Trip Description:
For the hike, we will be going across the Presidential Range. It is one of the roughest and most beautiful in New England. It will be a three day (two night) trip of approximately eight miles each day. We’ll travel about a mile an hour in this terrain. The first day will be the toughest as we will ascend the Northern Presidentials at Mt Madison. Each night we will be staying at huts (like dormitories) of the Appalachian Mountain Club. This will cut down on weight (no tents and less food) and you’ll get to experience the hut system, which is the only type like it in the world. Cost will be approximately $100-120 (two nights at AMC mountain huts at $44/night, one night at Pinkham notch, plus food and incidentals). Contact scout Harry if you are interested in going.
