Mt Washington
White Mountains, NH
21 August, 2002
The third 10 mile hike for hiking merit badge.  The trek began at Pinkham Notch up the Huntington Ravine trail.  This trail is listed as the steepest in the White Mountains and extreme caution recommended.  As such, we waited for a perfect day and got an early start to ensure adequate time.  Once atop Mt Washington, we headed towards Lake of the Clouds Hut as a side hike (to build the hike to ten miles) and then returned to Pinkham Notch (at Dusk!) via the Tuckerman Ravine Trail.  Excellent day, difficult terrain (up), fantastic views where we didn't want to leave - overall excellent trip.

Lesson learned - bring extra water purification tablets in first aid kit.  We took only 1/2 gallon per person for the trek up, planning to get water at the summit (visitor center) and then again at the Hermit Lake Campsite on the way down.  While this should have been more than adequate, the day was hot and water ran short - an extra pint each would have made a big difference.  While there was plenty of water on the trails, we decided to forgo without the water purification tablets.

Above 4500' elevation, the distinction between hiking and rock climbing became blurred.  Trail markers also became sparce leading to several wrong turns leading to steep drops
Approaching the ravine.  The trail ran to the right of the bolder field and then to the right of the notch in the center of the picture
The terrain in the notch was not for the weak footed.  The AMC recommends this trail for ascent only, advice that was taken into account when planning the trip

Descending from Mt. Washington.  AMC Lake of the Clouds hut in center.  Followed by Mt Monroe and Mt Eisenhower.
