Black Cap
Green Hills Preserve, North Conway, NH
24 July, 2002
First of the five ten mile hikes required for hiking merit badge.  Black Cap is within the Green Hills Preserve which is land purchased and donated to the Nature Conservency by Anna B. Stearns -  There is a plaque honoring contribution at the summit of Black Cap.  The hike itself is fairly gradual terrain with some very nice views of the Mt Washington Valley.  The hike began at the Thompson Road trailhead, up to Black Cap, past Mt Cranmore, then down Hurricane Mt Road, and then followed a road under construction (New North - South Road through North Comway), to circle back to our start point.
Total Trip Mileage:  10.2 Miles
Practicing map and compass skills at confusing unmarked trail junction.  The scouts got it right - the second time!  The first try would have put us on the Mason Brook trail going into Maine (with an eight mile detour).  But that is what application training is all about - one can only learn so much from a book.  By learning in tough situations the skills they learn will be retained for life.
