I am a female pure black Schnauzer, and I answer to the name of Schatten, which translates to "Shadow" in English. I have always been Schatten, since I was a tiny pup, but in Austria many people would call me "Shadow," as they thought other Austrians who didn't know English well enough were erroneously using the German version. Schnauzers are of German heritage, with the revolting history as rat chasers on boats, how inelegant can one's ancestors be? I was born in America to a privileged family, and the offspring of a wonderful mother and a champion father. I didn't see much of my father after I was born, but reveled in the attentions of Steve, the breeder. There were great plans for me (there was talk even for the dog show circuit), but Steve had one too many Schnauzers, including my mother, and regrettably had to find a new home for me. He thought and thought of who the right person could be, as he loved me and worried about my future. Lynda had lived next door, and had a salt-and-pepper Schnauzer of her own, Schmidty, and Steve knew of her love not only of animals, but of Schmidty. Lynda welcomed me and the three of us became a family.

I have a boyfriend over at Elfie's, a dachl, and much to everyone's chagrin, he sneaks in to see me no matter how well the fence is repaired. I don't go out of the garden alone, even when the gate is open, but there are certain "times" of the year when I should not be entertained by the boys. The gate is then closed, but this dog, he finds the way!

I now live in a small town near Salzburg, Austria, and share my time between Elfie and Karl, and Lynda. It is often asked, "With whom do you live?" I have two families now, as Lynda travels often alone when the conditions are not right for me. I have friends in many circles because of this, and count amoung them tennis players, sailors, horse people, old timer fanatics, flyers, golfers, motorcycle riders, hikers, chefs, restaurant owners, museum owners...I couldn't have asked for more.

I lived in America for awhile, near San Francisco in a town known as Pleasanton. Pleasanton might have been the death of me, as I ate some rat poison at a young age, and nearly hemorrhaged to death internally. The veterinarian, for all of her good work, had no faith that I would survive, but I did and lived to be of an older age.
Later we moved to Korea for 2 years and that was the beginning of my worldwide odyssey. Now that is a land that was too small for my tall Lynda, but all right for me, as long as I stayed away from the restaurants...they eat dog there! I flew to Korea in the business class cabin, right next to Lynda, and the airline hostesses fell in love with me. Maybe it was because I was so quiet, maybe it was this black beard I've sported all of my life (the Koreans were to take endless pictures of me), but I learned the facts of life early from Schmidty: how not to be a nuisance, how to look cute, when to be demanding and when to be tolerant (such as when I am dressed in one of the insufferable "outfits"), and the world seemed to always welcome me.
