| Yep, it's me. The Thinker. Here I am (and I'm sure this isn't at all cliched)! Now, you may be thinking that "philosophy" is a rare creature that has wierd preoccupations and has hardly anything to do with the real, everyday world. You may be thinking that you are not a philosopher, but in a way, we are all philosophers. For example, you've probably thought about this question before: Is there a God--an all-encompassing greater being? If so, what is He (or She) like? Read Redwing's Random Thoughts Now, you may not have actually sat down for an hour after lunch and literally asked yourself this question, but you probably hold some very firm beliefs about the answer to this question. You see, the very first thing "philosophy" really does is help us to put words to the questions that we have been unconsciously (and sometimes consciously) pondering our entire lives. The wonderful thing is, once we know the questions, we really begin to carefully think about what we believe, and what the implications of our beliefs are: if it is true that there is a God, then this says something important about the way the universe works, and it says something important about how we human beings behave. It aslo says something important if there is not a God. Of course, the existence of God is not the only question we continually ask ourselves. There are these: Does man have free will, or is his fate predetermined? Why? Read Redwing's Random Thoughts. Are human beings born with universal, unalienbable rights, or was that just a figment of Thomas Jefferson's imagination? Read Redwing's Random Thoughts Is there life after death? If so, what is it like? What is "real": only the things we can perceive with our senses, or is there more than that? Read Redwing's Random Thoughts Okay, at first glance maybe thse questions might look kind of, well, scary. These were never on a true-false quiz! But that's OK...trust me when I say that everyone can do this. Yes, these questions take some time to think about, but when you get into it, thinking about these questions can even be (dare I say...) fun. Especially if you get a freind or two in on this. Now that you know some of the "big questions" I challenge you to take an hour and sit down and think about what you believe are the answers to these questions. Naturally, there isn't really any "right" or "wrong" answer--these are exactly the kinds of questions that have many possible answers. My hostess, Redwing, has begun to post some of her own responses to these questions for your entertainment, and to give you something to think about and respond to. She has also posted some other questions for you to mull over. She would love to add more, but she is a student with a lot of classwork, so it could take a while. If you've been working on these questions and you want some more considerable conundrums to work out, click here If you would like read some good books that will get you thinking, then click here. Or, if you would like to visit philosophy sites on tthe web, click here If you want to learn some more about philosophy in general, then click here for a preview of a not-yec-complete section of this page which will list some ideas and people who have been important in the history of philosophy. If you want to Explore another topic, you can also go back to Exploration's Homepage. That's about all I have for now. Happy hunting and good luck! --The Thinker |
