| Some nice stuff to know: Here's a little something to help you feel smart--some names and terms that are important in the field of philosophy: Descarte--famous French philosopher known for the quote "I think, therefore I am." Marx--political philosopher whose ideas were the foundation for communism (the ideal, not the corrupt system practiced in actuality). Nietzsche-- ninteenth century philosopher famous (or inmafous) for his statement "God is dead". One surmises that he was an atheist. Materialism--the belief that nothing is "real" unless we can perceive it with our five senses. Rationalism--the belief that we cannot know anything true that we do not arrive at through the use of reason. Relativism--the belief that "truth" is relative--what is called "true" depends on what person you ask. In other words, this says that there is no one "truth" that exists in and of itself, because it depends entirely on point of view. Determinism--the belief that future events are entirely, unavoidibly determined by what has come before, or by supernatural powers such as fate or God.. Dualism--the belief that one thing (such as the normal, "physical" universe) is separate from another thing (such as a supernatural realm, God, etc). Whitehead--twentieth century philosopher who disagrees with Dualism, Reletivism, and Determinism, and who believed that both science and religion were valuable sources of knowledge. more |
