| Every year in october an interesting Shi'ite ceremony is held in the village of Mashhad Ardehal, about an hour's drive from Kashan. The ceremony, known as the carpet washing ceremony, commemorates the killing of the son of the fifth Imam (a historic Shi'ite leader) some 12 centuries ago. His body was carried in a carpet and washed in the nearby river. This ritual has been repeated ever since with the same carpet or what is left of it (but without the body, of course). The first part of the ceremony is inside the shrine erected for the hero, and is attended by men only; women have to wait outside, at the bottom of the stairs (see picture at right) | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
