An attempt to add some colour (and propaganda) to an ugly and typical Tehran building
Tehran: grey, sprawling and home to about 12 million Iranians
Wallpainting at Tehran university. Many of these paintings are about the war with Iraq; the soldiers who survived have easy access to the university, but they are far from popular
More paintings inspired by the religious government. On top Khomeini and the new leader Khamenei, along the street more daring billboards (note the Passion of Love!)
Veteran of the Iran-Iraq war handing out leaflets. The photos are about the cruelties of war
Mausoleum of Khomeini just outside Tehran. It is no longer a very popular place
Inside the mausoleum, with the tomb inside the smaller structure
The daily guard of honour; now a mere formality - a few people were even laughing
The local soccer team, Esteghlal, scores against Abu Dhaby in a match for the Asia cup. The crowd consisted of some 100 Abu Dhaby fans and 100,000 Iranians
Going homa after the match: people shouting from buses
Complete chaos around the stadium
Young fan on the bus: four-nil to Esteghlal!
Another young fan singing on the bus
The traffic jams continue on Azadi (Freedom) square
Azadi monument, built by the last Shah in 1971
The rich, who live in the higher, cooler parts of the city, not only drive in European and Americans cars but often live in modern versions of Roman or Greek apartments, full of European furniture where they can watch American soap-series via satellite
Thanks to the progress made in the past 50 years, Tehran now has - just like other modern cities - a huge smog-problem, and even a smog-meter
Away from the rich and modern: Tehran university
Still further away from the rich northern part: Tehran bazar, in the hot and poor southern part of the city
You won't see any fashionable women here, as in the more up-to-date shopping streets
Fastfood restaurant, Iranian style
Ad in the Tehran Times
Visiting a family (three generations) in Tehran
Here too the TV is very important
