| Why Go Greek? -- The Benefits | |||||||||||||||||||
| Friendship A sorority is an extended family. While you may have many friends at college, sorority membership provides you with the opportunity to develop friendships that will last a lifetime. Sororities also provide a warm family-oriented "home away from home" atmosphere for its members. While housing differs from campus to campus and by sorority, some sororities provide a separate house offering members a larger home environment. Scholastics Sororities encourage members to achieve their academic potential. Sorority members assist incoming students in adjusting to the demands of college life by providing educational programs designed to ensure a successful transition to campus. Specific programs include study tables, in-house tutors, maintenance of resource files and providing scholastic incentives. On many campuses, the all-sorority GPA is higher than the all-women's GPA. Leadership Traditionally, members of the Greek system occupy a large percentage of all leadership positions on campus. The Greek community is devoted to building future, local, national and world leaders by providing vast opportunities for leadership development. Greek organizations are self-governing, self-running communities, so committee members and chapter officers are responsible for the operation of the chapter. Sorority membership is one of the best ways to discover and define your leadership skills. Philanthropy Sorority life includes participation in service projects called philanthropies. Belonging to a sorority means giving of yourself. Funds raised and the time donated directly benefit local and national charitable organizations. Sororities give back to the community and to many national organizations while building Greek unity and personal friendships. |
